above 128 credits?

NYU undergraduate states that you need 128 credits in order to graduate. That is an average of 16 credits a semester.

If I were to take 18 credits every semester and get a total of 144 credits, do I have to pay extra money?

Also, it says that as a Stern student, one will have 10 electives. Lets say for example, that I fulfilled my 1st semester with

Calc 1 (4 credits)
Microecon (4 credits)
WTE (4 credits)
Nat Sci (4 credits)
Acting I (2 credits)

Would that Acting I class count towards the 10 electives that I am given in the Stern curriculum?

You can register for 18 credits per semester without paying additional fees.

okay thanks but does it take up my electives?

Acting I would take up an elective spot. For my class we have 38 elective credits to work with (I have 42, just because I placed out of the 4 credit part of statistics).

I’m pretty sure you have to pay for any credits above the 128 mark.

Are the 10 elective courses, included in a 128 credits or 144 credits courseload? I was thinking it was included in a 128 credits courseload?

Some classes are allowed to overlap programs, right?
Like, I know that for a math minor 2 of the classes have to not count toward another major or minor. I figured that Calc I would be used toward my Stern requirement and my math minor, leaving me with only 3 more math classes to take and thus freeing up one of the electives I’m alloted.
I figured that come classes could overlap for a marketing major and producing minor as well.

If an undergraduate Stern student gets 38 elective credits to choose from, does that mean so ONLY in a 128 credit 4-year course?

For example, if one were to take exactly 128 credits, then that means one has an average of 16 credits a semester. However, it seems that one can take up to a maximum of 18 credits a semester without extra charges or penalties for a total of 144 credits across the 4 years.

Therefore if one were to take 18 credits each semester, having a total of 144 credits a year, then does that mean that one would have a total of 54 elective credits? (38 elective + (144 - 128 = 16) from taking 18 credits a semester)

Or is one strictly limited to 38 elective credits regardless of how many credits one may take during the year?

shuffleace: “Therefore if one were to take 18 credits each semester, having a total of 144 credits a year, then does that mean that one would have a total of 54 elective credits? (38 elective + (144 - 128 = 16) from taking 18 credits a semester)”

YES. This is one of the ways that students are able to graduate early, add a minor, or double major. Those extra 2 credits beyond the normal course load are freebies, and are yours to use as you see fit. Anything beyond 18 credits in any given semester you do have to pay for however.

The problem is that most of the courses offered are 4 credits so there are not a lot of 1 or 2 credit courses to choose from. If you need to take a language however, there are 6 credit intensive courses that bring your credit total up to 18 for the semester. On the downside, they meet everyday M-F.

ohhh okay okay, but then i re-thought of it and realized that it doesn’t make a huge difference anyway since we are limited to 18 credits a semester, and since a class is on average 4 credits, we can usually only take about 4 classes a semester… T__T

thanks though, for the info CASmom!

You can take more than 18 credits per semester. It’s just that 18 is the maximum number of credits included in the base tuition. Some students take five four-credit courses and pay per credit for the extra 2 credits. In some cases this can actually be a cost efficient choice if it helps you graduate early, saving the room and board for another semester. But 20 credits is also a lot to handle in one semester.

When one chooses electives, can one choose literally any class?

So far I have 16 credits for 1st sem but I was thinking of adding an extra 2 credit course from Steinhart or CAS. Are there any strict limitations in terms of what classes can be taken as an elective and not?

Preferably, is there a website where it lists a whole bunch of elective courses that a student may take? (<– trust me I googled this inside out and couldn’t find a website)

Thankss

@shuffleace @CASmom
Great! That works for me because I have to take 3 major-specific electives at Stern, which are 1.5 are 3 credit courses. That leaves room for extra electives without having to go over 18 credits per semester. See, I want a double minor but I also want to be able to take electives outside of my major and minor programs.

shuffleace: “When one chooses electives, can one choose literally any class?”
---- Yes, as long as the school offering the course allows students from other schools to take the course and you have fulfilled any listed prerequisites. I don’t think the ALBERT system will allow you add a class for which you are not eligible.

“is there a website where it lists a whole bunch of elective courses that a student may take? (<– trust me I googled this inside out and couldn’t find a website)”

---- To the best of my knowledge there is not, though that would be a great idea for someone to put in the suggestion box at the Registrar’s office. It shouldn’t be that difficult to add a filter to search based on the number of credits. I can’t recall ever seeing a stand-alone 2 credit course in CAS. The only CAS 2 credit options I know of are for independent study, internships, and thesis, all of which are usually listed as 1-4 credits in ALBERT. I have heard other CC/NYU posters reference 2 credit courses available through Steinhardt and Tisch however.

yea I had to manually check out the departments and their courses and figured that all the “interesting” ones (or at least the one’s I found interesting xD) were mostly at Tisch and Steinhart. Sadly among those courses, the majority are 3-4 credits >< !!!

Thanks though for your response CASmom =)

I think that one way that NYU could respond to the student debt crisis is to allow students to take up to 20 credits as part of the base tuition. This would allow students who are trying to minimize debt by graduating early to take five 4-credit courses per semester if they think they can handle the load. Just my opinion.

Wait, are all Tisch courses open to non-Tisch majors?
I thought the only ones open to non-Tisch majors were the Open Arts programs.
