Above 2300 on SAT/ MIT Reject?

A family friend scored (rumored) at least a 2300-2350 his junior year, took 13+ AP classes (so naturally acquired a GPA somewhere above 4.0) and was rejected from MIT? (Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with my own college chances.. I'm only in 7th grade, and I'd like to think I know enough about college admissions and high schools results, as pretentious as it is to say. This friend was a reputable genius and I'm really confused as to why he was not admitted. While it may not be any of my business, it makes me wary of when I apply to college.. Are his results average or even below average? His father said he was rejected because he failed to complete some sort of science research. That's just an excuse, yes? I'm just getting really anxious.)

The fact you’re asking this means you dont know as much about college admissions as you think, because for the best schools (top 20 or so), it doesn’t really matter if you’re above average or have extraordinary statistics. Most of their applicants will be “geniuses” and work extremely hard, and many had varying opportunities and lives. At that time the school just has to look for “something” that sets that student apart. Some get in, and some don’t because there simply isn’t room. It’s a crapshoot and nothing guarantees acceptance.

Thank you! Osrry ik i probs look really stupid

Nothing stupid about the question at all… College admissions is everything but straightforward. Enjoy your time before you have to manage the process yourself.

You don’t look stupid at all. It’s just best to work hard and present the best you that you can. If a college rejects you it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a weak applicant :)

I have a 2300 SAT score. I took a lot of IB classes, so my weighted GPA is above 4.00. I was rejected by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, and Cal Poly SLO. I was waitlisted by UCD and UCI. My results do not surprise me. I am probably below average at these schools because my GPA is too low. My unweighted GPA is 3.66. My weighted GPA is 4.29. My capped UCGPA is 4.00.
