I just got my college grades, and so far, they are horrendous.

I had one A-, one B, and two B pluses

This is depressing. Now I'm doubting whether I can get into a t14 law school.

I just hope you're joking.

No, vtoodler, those grades are NOT horrendous. They are darned good for a first semester of college and they (alone) will not keep you out of a good grad school. Just like colleges do, grad schools understand the first term effect of college grades (i.e., often lower than usual, increasing with subsequent semesters). I know you're disappointed, but just keep working and you'll be fine.

Don't those grades put you on the Dean's list?

My freshman year first quarter grades were B, B+, B, and B-. I end up graduating magna cum laude with highest honors in my majors. I got into a nice grad school.

Sadly, based on her(his?) other posts it's not a joke.

This is what, a 3.4 or so?

Your dreams of law school are not crushed

If you start talking about top "14" law schools like you did on another thread then you take US News way too seriously, because

You can still get a great legal education

your campus dining hall might be hiring

seriously... those are more than fine. If you keep that "low" gpa until you graduate, you will still be able to do quite well for yourself.

First semester is settling in time. If you want a top law school and you know their stats profile, you know what you'll have to do to get there. Remember it's always easiest to pull the GPA up this next semester than at any other time in your career. Pull a 4.0 or close and you are looking good again.

My Law School was a darn good one (but not Top Twenty) and my first year, not semester - year, average was nowhere near that good. I couldn't see a 3.4 from where I was. LOL.

This is the only college site on the planet where someone would think these grades are poor for a first term college student. So far DD has one A, one B+ and one B-. Using your criteria of "horrible", she should consider dropping out of college. We think that her grades are pretty good for a first term freshman.

Isn't that the truth? Survival without undue damage should be the goal.

Sheez. I should be absolutely livid about my first quarter of grad school then!

vtoodler, you did great. Congrats!

Yep. I'd have been celebrating big-time. Of course, I don't know how anyone could have told the difference between me "celebrating big-time" and "Thursday". I survived. There's hope for any of y'all.

I'm actually a sophomore at WUSTL. As I rise up in class, time runs out to bring up the gpa.

What's your cumulative GPA?

Well, then this where the rubber meets the road. Either make the sacrifices necessary for the big GPA or don't. You still have time to impact your chances.

Your grades aren't horrible at all, but your expectations are most likely pretty unrealistic.

Wash U is a very respected school. Your GPA will be fine, but you will need a high LSAT. There ARE good law schools below the top 14- just give some thought to where you want to live after law school when you make your choice. For example, SMU has an incredible network in Dallas.

Not one word about why you earned such horrible grades. Classes too hard? Not studying enough? How are your study habits? Are you too easily distracted by your computer? ie, internet surfing and/or IM ?
