tsdad – re Rutgers having the first seminary in N. America, that depends on how you define that. Harvard was founded essentially as a school for clergy preparation, as was Yale. It just wasn’t called “seminary”.

John Harvard, a minister, left half his library and estate to fund the establishment of Harvard College in 1638. This from a brochure from 1643:

"“To advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches.”

I guess they didn’t appreciate illiterate ministers!

^^ The Massachusetts BAy Colony actually established Harvard, John Harvard was a contributor, not the founder.

Penn is not the oldest university. It can however make a reasonable claim at being “America’s first university” as it was the first institution to grant advanced degrees.

^ Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying.

I’m pretty sure Cal is the only school with tree-sitters protesting the construction of an athletic center =(

We also have Happy, Happy, Happy Man!

Dunn–

I took the statement about the New Brunswick Theological Seminary off their website. The seminary is located on a rise on the RU campus. I think we used to refer to it as “holy hill.” The Raritain Valley was one of the centers for the first Great Awakening, led by Theodore J. Frelinghuysen, beginning in the 1720s.

As far as I know, Oberlin’s art rental program is unique. We have an extensive art museum, and at the beginning of each semester, students camp out overnight to be able to get a piece of artwork for the semester. I definitely don’t know any other college that will allow you to have a Picasso hanging on your dorm room wall.

I think the North Carolina School of the Arts (soon to be UNC-Arts) is the only public state CONSERVATORY in the nation, and it is consistently ranked just below The Julliard School. It also has a nationally recognized film school, dance school, and dramatic arts school. It has produced a LOT of famous actors, musicians, artists and filmmakers, including its present Chancellor.

Just below? I always thought Eastman or Indiana U was second to Julliard.

FSU film school is the only film school that pays the cost of student films..
USC film school is the only film school to have recived a donatiom of over 20 million dollars(jorge lucas donated 100 million)
USC is also one of the few schools to offer a major in business with a concetration in entertainment. I only know CSU fullerton as another school to offer that major.

Chapman university is the first US university to offer an acting program specific for film ( BFA in Screen Acting ).

Florida State also has a student-run Circus.

UIUC has an underground library.

Well not as well known of a school, but UCR does hold some classes in a movie theater.

Stanford has a New Guinea Sculpture Collection on campus. Nearly 15 years ago, it recruited 10 master carvers from Papua New Guinea for the summer, during which they carved over 40 different sculptures of authentic Papua New Guinea art. Some are stone, wood, free-standing, in trees, etc. and all are kept in a small oak/cedar grove in front of one of the dorms, free to see, visit, and touch anytime. The purpose is “to experiment with and reinterpret New Guinea aesthetic perspectives within the new context of a Western public art space.” It’s really unique, I’d say.

Rice has a pretty unique tradition in Beer Bike (which is better than Christmas). Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about it:

Every student who attends Cooper Union has full tuition paid for, and the only thing they have to pay for is room and board each year.

Went up to the football stadium at UNC. Not a fan of football, just watching… but it was beautiful.

I’d have a hard time finding a more unique college than Deep Springs.

Look it up and you’ll know exactly what I mean.
