Academic Aid, Art Schools, & Other Questions.

My D, a high school senior, is taking a year (or a semester) off and during that time will be looking at art schools. I'm very encouraged to read here that some have gotten good merit aid from MICA, since that is at the top of her list so far, and is also close to home. My D is a National Merit Finalist and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Finalist. Depending on where she ends up going, she may not be able to use either of these scholarships (NM has not been offered yet). So we are hoping that she can get some merit aid based on academics. She should also have a strong portfolio, as she is one of a few top artists in a good HS art program. She's interested more in Fine Arts than industrial design, and wants to explore many media, such as fiber. Any information that anyone can provide about merit aid and programs at specfic schools will be greatly appreciated.

If you go to SCAD's website, they are very open about their cutoffs for academic scholarships. They say straight out that if you get X GPA or Y SAT score, you'll recieve a certain amount of money. Other schools aren't so open about it, but there's one school that you can get a clear idea of anyway!

CLdad....MICA sounds like a great option for your daughter financially. Visits to art schools will determine which schools are the best fit academically, artistically, and personally. RISD's academic liberal arts program is excellent and there is also the opportunity to enroll in classes at Brown. I can not speak to their scholarships...which would be a good question on your visit!

Thanks for the responses for far. I did read the MICA website. While they have a number of scholarships, when "allocated over 4 years," most are rather small, compared with the cost of attending there. I'm not complaining, just looking at it realistically. Since they offer so many different scholarships, I wonder if they combine them? D is a MD Dist. Scholar in academics, not Visual Arts. I'm sure we be visiting there and will discuss this with the Financial Aid office.

There are always outside scholarships. I don't think any college students really get by only only scholarships colleges offer. If you're looking for academic scholarships, it'd be in your interest to look at schools interested in improving their score ranges. Off the top of my head schools that may have purely academic scholarships: SCAD, Pratt, SVA, SAIC, etc

I know SVA has a few merit scholarships, a friend of mine recieved one for 10k a year. Pratt has a combined merit and artistic scholarship, similarly, of vary ranges - but I was able to get one for 10k a year.

chect fastweb.com and get a little crafty with google - I'm sure your daughter will have some success that way :)

Check out the scholarships offered by the Maryland Delegates. It is called the Md Delegate Scholars program. Hundreds of thousands of dollars goes unclaimed because folks don't know about it. The least that I have seen people get is $1,000 per year for each year of college. It could be a lot more too.
