When does MIT kick students out of campus after finals (in May) are over? I know that the last day of classes is May 14, but is that the last move-out day too? This is assuming that I won't be staying on campus during the summer.

it’s going to depend on which dorm you’re in, but for the most part, the kick-out day is the Saturday after finals.

… unless you stay for the summer. That’s the nice thing about MIT - you can stay year-round.

This is assuming that I won’t be staying on campus during the summer.

oh yeah.
end of class != done with finals

finales are after classes are done.
and I think there is like a dead week in the middle for no psets, just studying

Heh, hardly. All you get is a slightly extended weekend.

Yes, KnightMair, I read this =P. I was merely commenting on how staying for the summer is AWESOME.

Did you know that at Harvard, you have to move out of the dorms after classes even if you are staying for the summer? My undergrad told me this. I find this very strange, and a huge pain to boot.

Yeah, a bunch of my friends’ schools are like this. They ‘close down’ for a couple of weeks during the summer - or even during Christmas! Imagine that, having to move out every semester…

Many of my friends are attending or will attend colleges like that; the dorms completely shut down and they do a thorough clean-out of all the rooms. Kind of sucks, especially if they’re doing research or internships on campus during the summer.

I guess that’s the advantage of MIT dorms being rather small – MacGregor always made all of the summer residents move to a particular entry for the summer so they could do repairs on the other entries, but they were able to clean all of the summer rooms in the few hours between when the year-round residents checked out and the summer residents checked in. So you might have to move entries, but you wouldn’t have to move your stuff all the way out of the dorm.

I dont think any other dorm forces you to move at all, though. I know in EC people stationary for like years at a time, as long as they maintain summer residence there.

Part of just about any dorm is liable to shut down during the summer, I think. 4th WAR of Senior House, for example, is closed this summer (most of those residents are now on Fifth East :D).

You are right though, pebbles: with the exception of summer, dorm residents stay on the same floor/hall/entry from year-to-year.

Actually, pebbles is right about EC - they don’t consolidate like some dorms. I believe this summer some repairs will be made in some Goodale rooms, but other than that no one’s moving =D

They are abating 10 Goodale rooms, shutting down 20 so that it’s more convenient for the workers. I mean there’s some good that comes of moving, though, the people who don’t budge for 4 years tend to become filthy pack rats. I took the opportunity to beat my rugs, organize my books, and throw out a lot of useless ****.
