"Academic Community"

I was looking at the upenn website and i stumbled upon this handy tool.

[Penn: Find Academic Programs](http://www.upenn.edu/aps/)

it allows you to search for upenn’s academic programs across all twelve of its schools.

Also, for social communities, check out this:

[Office of Student Life at the University of Pennsylvania](<a href=“University Life”>University Life)

It seems as though they want you to be specific regarding the academic communities… What if I plan on going undecided? This essay topic is really rather unclear to me…

^ the question basically reads “why do you want to go to penn?”

ok
but the questions asks. academic or Social communities soo should we pick only one and develop the whole essay on it???

^it says academic AND social.

wow…im happy that we didnt have this question last year. but it’s basically like the why penn essay but more specific

Academic communities: think in terms of research; anyone involved in the hard sciences has the opportunity to conduct original research in their field using the labs on campus. Those in the social sciences can contribute to new works of philosophy, political science, psychology, etc. Those in the liberal arts can write novels. Those in Wharton can use the freshman Management project to impact Penn and Philadelphia in a very real way. Those in Engineering can design products to make lives easier. Those in nursing have clinicals which help others and give them experience in the field. Penn’s status as a research university is something that is taken VERY seriously, and research opportunities are all over the place.

Social: Penn boasts more than 200 student organizations, and these organizations are run BY students. For example, I am the Glee Club’s publicity manager. Through my efforts as well as the efforts of other members of our executive board, we have appeared on television more than six times since September. Pretty sweet, actually, as I think about it.

Essentially this question is asking what you would bring to the table of you went to Penn. The admissions officers don’t just want bookworms… they want people who are going to contribute to the school and/or to their greater Philadelphia community.

[Penn Appetit](http://www.dolphin.upenn.edu/pappetit/)

Looks awesome! I didn’t do newspaper in high school, will that be a negative if I write that I want to be a part of this?

no, they’d love to have you i’m sure

What if i don’t know what i enjoy doing yet? should i write an essay about how i like everything?

What do you think they’ll feel about an essay that didn’t talk about any particular program at Penn, but the school as a whole?
I also did 217, btw.

By “academic communities” could I just talk about their high energy physics program or something?

“Academic communities” is a pretty ambiguous term, and they maybe meant for it to be interpreted in different ways. If it’s related to academics in some way, your topic will probably be suitable.

^^^what do you feel about an essay that talked not of anything specific but penn as a whole?

Question: The supplement says “do not exceed one page”
Do they mean single spaced? double spaced?

Is 500 words a good estimate?

this question is legit driving me insane. im trying to help my friend whos applying but im stuck. what the hell is a social community? what the hell is an academic community? this question is very vague. can you interpret academic community to mean the major/minor u intend to study and social community as a club like model congress or being a part of student government??

I am confused too. I found this link and it kinda helps.
[Can someone please tell me what this UPenn prompt is asking?](The meaning of 'community' - what this UPenn prompt is asking?)

From what I got, and how I wrote my essay is that Penn really wants to see if you’d contribute to the school. I wrote my essay based on something I really liked doing, and how I worked with the underclassmen etc. I think that they could see something that would translate well into the school. That’s my opinion at least, good luck fellas, it’s a HARD essay to write.

Don’t over-think the word “community.” Ask yourself what communities you will be a part of at Penn. Be genuine, and describe how you will make a contribution. There are hundreds of communities at Penn, big and small. Anything from Hillel & the greek scene, to intramural sports, to your dormitory hall.

Are you there? I am looking for U Penn Community and need advice on what community it has. I looked up the web but not finding the clubs I want to - do you know if U P has Scholastic Bowl club, Math club, golf club (I am passionate about it but probably not good enough to be in the school team), like high schools have? Can you take a look at a draft and provide some feedback? This is my first time using this system (just signed up), how do I post my draft so that just dedicated person like you can see it?? Would it be convenient for you to call or I call you (faster to get back and forth for multiple questions)? Thanks a lot.
