Just a quick question. My son's award letter arrived today from The University of Alabama. We were expecting him to get the ACG grant. He is going to graduate with honors and has taken 4 years of the highest science and math he can take with AP courses.

He was awarded the maximum Pell grant amount since our EFC was 0. He also received the SEOG Grant and some other minor scholarships along with some student loans. Should he ask the financial aid office at the college if there was a mistake? I thought it was automatic if you meet all of the requirements. On his SAR or somewhere I read that he probably qualified for the ACG.

The ACG is one of the harder grants for the financial aid officers to award as it requires them to verify that the student meets the academic criteria including checking the final HS transcript. The self reported information on FAFSA just alerts the financial aid people that the student *may *be eligible. They are then responsible for verifying it. My daughter was not awarded it until right before the start of her freshman year fall semester (at which time it replaced a some loan money). I believe this is quite common.

At UCLA, they didn’t award the ACG until a couple weeks into the semester. They need to make sure that the student is enrolled in the proper classes, as I recall.
