Long story short, in my junior year I let my friend look at my homework ( Yes look, I honestly did not know he was going to copy my homework ) and he got caught copying it. We both got in trouble for it though. Does this count as Academic dishonesty on my part?

Unfortunately I think it does (if you are caught), although pretty much everyone has done it at one point or another.

If it happened the way you say, it’s a pretty minor infraction, but I’m afraid it qualifies as academic dishonesty. If you describe it completely, it shouldn’t ruin your life.

Well, will this go on your record? It sounds like you could appeal this with your principal. Anyway, on the common app there is a place for you to explain it.

Here is what the CA says:

If you answered

Keep in mind your GC will be asked the same question for verification.

Keep in mind too that if it did result in disciplinary action and you are asked to explain, the correct response is not “I let my friend look at my homework ( Yes look, I honestly did not know he was going to copy my homework).” It sounds like you don’t realize that what you did was wrong - and still aren’t sure.

To clarify - that is cheating. When a friend asks to see your homework in the future, the answer is ‘no, but I’ll be happy to compare answers and if we disagree, we can work on the problems together to figure out which of us made a mistake and why.’
