Sophomore year, my close friend and I had this very large AP World project that was heavily weighted onto our grade. As usual, we had procrastinated until the very last minute. she and I "collaborated" (not copied) with each other on some vocabulary terms. I figured since they used the same textbook, it would be alright. However, it turned out not to be so. About 30 students in total were caught for academic dishonesty for that one assignment. we received a 0 on the assignment. my grade plummeted to a C (my only C on my transcript). It was a serious breach of character; it called into question the very fiber of my moral character. It was an honest mistake. Under my school's academic dishonesty policy, the student caught of cheating receives a zero on the assignment and a saturday school. our teacher turned in our papers the last day of school, and I have not received any disciplinary action (i.e., saturday school). The offense does not show up on my transcript. My question is, is it even worth mentioning on my applications? The glaring "C" is the only reminder of what I did. I want to take responsibility for my actions, but I don't want to lose out on the chance of attending an upper-level school. What are your suggestions? I am in need of some serious coping and advice.

Is that all you received?..well, most teachers let it slide in my school but if it’s during an exam and one of the ‘department heads’ catch you, then your facing suspension and possibly expulsion. Well, i would say you shouldn’t mention it. Just take the C because mentioning it can possibly worsen the case. Then again, mentioning it might possibly let them know your actually honest. hmm…well, looks like i can’t help you here!

Deny deny deny

thanks fasinro.
what do you mean by that BMan?

Pretend it never happened and, if questioned, deny cheating.

okay. thanks for the advice :)

^^hahaha!..brilliance.

“About 30 students in total were caught for academic dishonesty for that one assignment. we received a 0 on the assignment.”

Just curious- How exactly did your teacher catch 30 students for that ONE assignment? For me, we don’t even have 30 students in our class! Just wondering, how many students were in your class?

I find it hard to believe that ONE assignment gave you a C. It was a combination of past assignments grades that brought you down as well, not just one assignment. You must have had a B in that class if a 0 brought you down to a C. (Depending on the exact value of the C)At my school there is a policy that no one assignment can weigh more than 150% of a students grade. There must be some sort of policy at your school- even if the teachers don’t tell you about it.

I would tell them the story so they can know that you’re a procrastinator and cheater!

let me clarify: 30 students in our graduating class who took AP world were caught for academic dishonesty. I was at a low B before the assignment, and the assignment brought me down

daniel, this question is from the Disciplinary History section of the Common App:

Have you ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at any educational institution you have attended from 9th grade (or the international equivalent) forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct, that resulted in your probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from the institution?

The Common App is designed to bring out what colleges want to know, so I don’t think you need to go beyond answering this question truthfully. You can answer “no” because you have not even received any detention, let alone probation or suspension. I think your teacher made a conscious decision to limit the punishment to a poor grade. Learn your lesson, but you don’t need to mention it in your college applications. Good luck!

Thank you, that was a very big relief. BTW, I am not a monster for cheating; I’m human, just flawed. Any other takers?

A bunch of people in my stats class were caught copying homework from each other (they copied the wrong problems down, then they all copied the ‘wrong homework’…) and got into trouble with the administration. I dont know if they even mentioned it on their apps though… The only thing that happened was a 3 hour detention after school and they all got 0’s on the assignment
