I was dismissed from my university because of a low GPA. I would really appreciate any feedback!

Dear Dean,

I am writing to appeal on behalf of my academic dismissal from the "University of...". I was already aware of the the news, but I was still very devastated to receive a message informing me of my academic dismissal. I would like you to take in consideration of reinstating me for the next semester.

I confess, my past semesters were very rough, and my GPA continued to remain below good academic standing. I know there is no excuse for my poor performace, but I would like to explain the circumstances. During my first semester at "University of...", my little sister was very sick with a condition called fibromatosis and was taking chemotherapy. Her condition worsened during the fall semester and if it were to worsen, she would have to undergo surgery for an amputation. I knew that I was under academic suspension and that I had to pull my grades up. But knowing my parents were so far away, working hard to pay for my sister's chemotherapy bills and my school tutition, had placed me under great stress. I thought I had everything under control, but after when she improved throughout the spring semester, our family started having financial issues. The home situation kept me from focusing on my studies, and without any guidance, I became overwhelmed with my schoolwork. I had no plan: no idea on what to do or where to go.

Also, in my freshmen year, I received an F without any explaination which was partially one of the other reasons why I believe my GPA sunk. I have received some responses to my emails from my Theater professor, and have gone to her office several times throughout the last two previous semester, but have never been able to sit down and talk to her about the issue. However, at that point, the situation became urgent and I contacted the Department Chair for help in order for the grade issue to be fixed. It was the very last minute, but I was unsure of how to handle the situation and did not want to cause trouble. Instead of waiting towards the end of the year, I understand it was my mistake that I had not contacted the Department Chair earlier throughout the semester for help.

I tried my hardest and I thought I had everything in control, but in the end I was wrong. If there's one thing I learned throughout this entire experience, I've learned that time is very important in life and sometimes you cannot wait for things to happen. Eventually, it's you who needs to make things happen.

With all sincerity, I am asking that I am given another opportunity and I am not dismissed from school. I love "University of...", and I consider it to be my second home. It would mean so much to me to graduate and earn a degree from this school. I understand that I am now an adult, and that this situation could have been preventable. If reinstated, I will improve my study habits by learning the basic principles of studying, focusing better on schoolwork, and following my advisor's advice on communicating better with my professors. Thankfully, my sister has been accepted a full-ride scholarship for her school and her chemotherapy bills have been paid off, so my family will not be having so much financial troubles as they were in before. In addition, I have met with my advisor during the semester and have discussed on switching different majors, and my Theater professor also has contacted me for a grade change.

To me, there is no other place for a student to be, besides being surrounded by an learning enivironment. Please understand that I am honestly a good student, but that I was not fully prepared for my college experience. As an adult, I will have a mature, realistic expectation of what I will bring and overcome through the new semester. I apologize for placing myself into this position, and I hope you will give me a second chance. Thank you for considering this appeal.

Sincerely,
kooeli
