Academic Dismissal - Clean Slate

My son has been academically dismissed twice: the first time due to a discrepancy in units (1.5 credit units missing to move to junior year) and the second time for failing a class. He wants to now try and apply for junior level at another 4-year university. I saw some advice about going to community college first to build his GPA but not sure what classes he should take. He had attended a semester of community college as well and didn’t do too well. He may also have an undiagnosed case of ADD except a mention by his therapist.
I’m completely at a loss about how to help him to go back to school and earn his bachelor’s degree. There are private college counselors/coaches but we can’t really afford them.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you

See if you can get him an admissions appointment at both the local four year and a local CC …even if on zoom. Make all records available. Have them guide you.

Many local schools, such as MTSU near me, offer degree completion opportunities and will grant credit for work.

Best of luck.

Academic dismissal usually occurs due to F or D grades in too many classes (not just one class), rather than being a few credit units short of the next higher class standing. It may help others help you if you give more detail on the student’s intended major, course work attempted and completed, and grades.

My opinion…I think your son needs to find out why he is having the difficulties he is having…and work to get that under control.

He could also explore careers that don’t require a college degree.

Maybe part time college and part time work would be a good start.

But really…the why needs to be addressed. He wasn’t successful at his college or at a CC, and figuring out why could help him build success for his next step.

College will always be there.
