This is my first time posting on college confidential but I have questions that I might find the answers to soon. I transferred to SUNY Oswego in the fall of 2016 after having an overall 3.2 GPA in community college. Since I’ve been attending SUNY Oswego I’ve struggled greatly with academics. I let the social life and partying consume my life and I now realize how much time I wasted and I want to get my academic career back on track because I’m not giving up. I’m fairly certain that I’m going to be getting a letter soon telling me that I’ve been disqualified. I was wondering what steps I should be taking to move forward. My plan is to meet with and advisor from my previous community college and SUNY Albany which is not to far from me. My questions are what are my chances to win an appeal? I had no outside factors influencing my poor performance. It was all on me and I plan on taking responsibility for what I didn’t do to be successful. Also, in the case that an appeal doesn’t work can I even get in to any other schools besides community college? If that is the case is my best option to try and get back into my previous school? I’m just wondering how I would be able to get my grades up if I can only attend a community college that doesn’t offer the upper division classes I failed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You should try reading up on the SUNY policy for academic disqualification. I was also disqualified (CSULA), I talked with my department chair, he signed a petition for reinstatement, and I submitted it to the admissions department and got reinstated with academic probation the next semester.
If this is your first disqualification, I would think you can probably get reinstated, but I’m perplexed why you’re meeting with a community college adviser rather than a SUNY adviser. I would suggest talking to them, and do what they say, file your petition and start on the road to recovery. If possible, you should take classes through “open university” if such a program exists in your school. This can be used as verifiable proof that you have changed and are ready for improvement.
Best of luck to you!
