Everyone is assigned an AI number because the Ivy League athletic conference maintains academic integrity by requiring that the AI of the roster of each varsity team be within one-half a standard deviation of the AI of the school as a whole. The Admissions Offices apparently don't use the AI, per se. But of course, the AI is based on numerical data that the Admissions office DOES have and uses in making its decisions, so whether AI is "used" or not is just a matter of semantics.

Let's put it this way, if everyone with a high AI were to be accepted into Harvard, then the class would be filled almost 6-7 times over. Obviously high AI doesn't really mean that much except you are a qualified applicant.

Yea true; A high AI just means you are in the academic range and probably would not have to worry about Grades/Scores, but everything else in your college app to stand out (essays, awards, Ex-Cs, Course Load, recommendations , and interview (minor). Does anyone have any idea what percent of the freshman class have 9s, 8s, 7s, 6s; Take a wild guess; just curious.

Well, AI = SAT Is converted to a 20-80 scale + SAT IIs converted to a 20-80 scale + class rank converted to a 20-80 scale. We really don't know the last two, but we know that the median CR+M SATs are right at 1500, which would be 75 on the 20-80 scale. So if you assume that 75/80 is about the median for SAT IIs and class rank as well, then the median Harvard AI should be about 225 which is on the 7-8 AI border. But as disasterous says, there are many times as many 225s and up than there are places in the entering class. It's far better to be hookfully robust and somewhere acceptable in the competitive SAT and GPA ranges than to be at the top of those ranges with only academic credentials.

lolzlolzlolz! got into yale with a 5 what?1!?!?!?!? whoever did that is probz dumb as helllll

Eating Food I am glad you got in with a 5; You must be a very impressive person besides your grades.

7-8 sounds right. I am a 7 and slightly hooked (Been in a war and wrote a good essay about it). I also have good unique and similar (Leadership/Business/Community Service) Ex-Cs and I play rugby (which is not recruited but maybe a diversity factor since very few HSchoolers play rugby). Hope to get in but highly doubt I have a chance.

awww thx! But I mean... my academics aren't that bad! I got a 2230 on the SAT and 760, 750, 740 on SATIIs. I also have seven 5s and one 4 on my APs as well as being named a national merit semifinalist. I think the thing that killed my AI is my class rank which is 26/316 (and that was after getting only one B during my freshman year).

I think that there are too many random factors that go into making up ones profile. For that reason, I feel as if admissions officers look past pure Academic Index. For instance, my school is extremely competitive! 25 people have 4.0 averages which skews our ranking drastically. Also, we have 6 people going to Ivy League schools next year with probably a few more on the way when RD decisions come out.

But let me be honest, I'm also a URM legacy at Yale so I think that's what got me in... not my AI. But you guys can see for yourselves.. here are my stats if you're curious:

Those are good stats (definitely in the ball park), Yale might have also realized that your school is super competitive and analyzed your app based on that information.
