Now that most schools offer the option of just sending ACT scores (no SATs), does anyone know how top colleges calculate Academic Index if only ACT scores are sent? Do they just use the composite, or do they use the scores from the different sections (Math, English, etc.). Also, what do they use for SAT Subject test scores?

I used the formula:

(ACT SCORE/36)*800 = SAT Score... it more or less works.

Or the conversion chart of your choice.

The College Board's official conversion chart: http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/highered/ra/sat/satACT_concordance.pdf

Though before you worry about Academic Index... know that it is only used by Ivies to asses recruited athletes. It's not applied to the general applicant pool, and it's not used outside the Ivies. Some schools, especially large state schools, do use numbers-based algorithms to narrow down the applicant pool. But top universities and LACs are much more interested in getting a holistic view of each applicant, not just the numbers. It's definitely not worth worrying about the minutiae of how AI is calculated.
