Academic Index

Does anyone have any information on what academic index accepted students have? Thanks

There’s no threshold AI you have to get to rejected or accepted. The application is reviewed holistically.

If you really want to know what the average AI is, you can just go the Dartmouth decisions thread and calculate the AI for the accepted students.

An A1 is generated holistically, in part, by schools that use it. Dartmouth did when Hernandez was there but I don’t know if they still do.

Laskaris says they still do, and it ranges from 1 to 9, or 1 to 5, i forgot.

1 to 9. It says so in A is for Admission.

http://www.mka.org/uploaded/college_counseling/Publications/AI_Guidelines_Worksheet.pdf</a></p>

Actually what laskaris says in the most recent “online interview” which can be seen here,
[Discussion With The Dean](<a href=“Home | Dartmouth Admissions”>Home | Dartmouth Admissions)
is that they only use the AI for athletic admits but they do use a rating system for different components of the application using a 1-5 scale.

This is the 2001 Dartmouth scale from M. Hernandez book: A is for Admission pp:89
(this may have changed but at least she provides the calculation correctly which this site and the one referred to do not, which is to ass all 3 SAT scores (divided by 10) in CR,M,W and divide by 3. For the calculator on this web site the only way to use it is to put the SAT I writing section in as the 3rd SAT Subject test. So the site calculator is totally out of date as is the link provided. Although the Ai averages may be close.
Someone asked if Dartmouth was 1-9 and that is correct along with UPenn I think.
I put in enough values to get the idea without plagiarizing the book I hope.

180 and below- < 1%

181-192 5% (recruited athletes mainly?)

193-202 (recruited athletes, maybe a few hardship URMs?)

203-210 11% (athletes, legacies with great recs. ECs. etc. a few URMs?)

211-215 (legacies, URMs, special talent, solid ECs, grt.recs, essays E)

216-220 50%
(anyone rating a 6 or above has to have like 2300 SAT, 750-800 subj. tests and top 5 percent class likely/rank in top 5-likely to get in if essay and recs.and ECs are okay)

221-224 7,8,9s are pretty much very likely to get in w/o something odd

225-229 like a very very bad recommend, disciplinary action etc.

230 and above. 94%

Its pretty clear that while the Ai is only a SUPPOSED to be a component of the application review, it has a high correlation with being accepted, especially if you are at a 6 or above. You cannot help but also notice that the 5,6,7,8,9s are clumped together and only range from 211 to 231 so that while 4s, 3s, and below have a range of 9 and 8 mapped to their respective Ai. But when you get to an Ai of 5 and above a small 5 point change-easily half the margin of error of the CRs) can move a candidate from a 5 to a 6 virtually doubling admissions chances, at least if the stats provided are correct.

The fact that the CRs could skew a student’s Ai by as much as 12 points simply because a student’s school reports rank vs. weighted GPA (particularly in a school of 199 or less) a student ranked 10 would get a lowly 65 CRS vs a 78 for a weighted GPA of 4.1 (96), Why not at least take the avg. of the two? Answer is they think the CRs if its based on rank is the holy grail of numbers. I think that its actually the random admissions factor number.

Take this hypothetical student:

2300 SAT 1. Subj tests 700 700 their CRS
SAT 1 output would be 766.6/10= 77 SAT number (700/10 + 700/10)/2: 70 SAT subj number + CRs of student who ranked 10 out of 199 which assigns a CRs of 65
Repeating from above- SAT (77) + Subj Test (70) +CRs(65) = 212 yields D Ai of 5.

Now use the CRs based on weighted GPA reported by HS without rank and you get a CRs of 78 for the student’s 96/4.1 weighted GPA.
So applying using the numbers from before:
SAT 1 (77)+ Subj test (70)+ (CRs) 78=225 which yields a D Ai of an 8.
So same student, different CRs reporting method causes student to go
from a 5 to an 8. Absolutely shows that the CRS is flaky and needs some stats. and math to normalize for all reporting methods, and I do not think that rank is the only input that should be included in the CRs.
But in the end, its a number to help gauge a student, but if the Adcoms do not address the problems with this right of the bat and make a clear judgement on a case like this
and move the applicant up or down a number depending on the reporting method it would be disappointing as while its a component its a major component in the decision.

It seems clear the rank is the most important factor in interpreting GPA when almost half the class was ranked 1 or 2. That’s likely the vast majority of unhooked students.

Does the Dartmouth AI match with the AI calculator on CC? Because I’m only in the 2200s for my SATs, and have a relatively low GPA, but my AI was calculated to be 218, which is in the range of 6, but the stats don’t match. How do I calculate my CR portion of the D AI?

There are tables based on rank and it depends on how big your graduating class is. Typical is if your rank is like 5 then you CRs is like 72. Maybe you have good Subject test scores? As they only require 2 and I guess if you get 800s on each you would get an 80 for that variable…if you do not have rank out of size of class you are lucky as your school reports only weighted or unweighte GPA and your Ai will come out higher…but I am assuming maybe you just did not get your rank from GC? Anything but 1 is likely to come out lower than using GPA…but rank is used preferentially.

I found this website really helpful for CR

[Calculating the Ivy League Academic Index](http://home.comcast.net/~charles517/ivyai.html)

My school doesn’t rank, so how do I calculate the CR portion of the AI with my UW GPA? Or is that not possible?

UW or weighted but as I went to lengths below to explain it will come out way higher…a 4.1 GPA gets you a CRs of 77 but if you are ranked 12 you will get about a 66…same grades different AI—yep, that is the problem with Ai. U R lucky school does not report rank unless you are in top 2-4…
