"Because you have achieved academically at the highest level and because you've indicated an interest in Liberal Arts as a Penn State home, you have been selected to be a part of a unique Academic Promise group in the college of the Liberal Arts. This group as comprised of you and 199 other students who show special aptitude for scholarly achievement, such that we want to reach out to you in special ways."

It's no Schreyers (I'll most likely be rejected from that), but, I'm curious as to what it is...

Has anyone else here gotten it? If so, do you have any clue as to what this entails? (My guess is diddlysquat, but, I just want to make sure...)

Yea, I think it's diddlysquat. Good diddlysquat, too. Sounds like the Dean's attempt to ID some exceptional kids in LA and give them some extras. Grab it and tell 'em to "send $$, too."

Why pooh-pooh this, no matter what it is? Appreciation, gratitude, and humility are all good things, and good to be recognized, don't you think?

heavenwood - it might be something new - that's likely why you can't find it on the website. Call the dept and ask questions. PSU is doing this type of thing for certain programs. The business school has the Sapphire program. Top applicants to the school are invited and it comes with some perks (special classes, network opportunities and educational events). However, the overlap with Schreyer is confusing. We werd told All Schreyers are Sapphires but not all Sapphires are Schreyers. Huh? On top of this they have the Mitte scholarship program at Smeal so there are these scholars too (this comes with money and offers yet more networking opporunities)! Bottom line though, it's an honor. Get more info... and Congratulations!

HeavenWood...I also notice on the website that college of Liberal Arts has a
scholarship form due March 5. Definitly do this as you obviously have a great chance at this. You can get scholarships from the college and Schreyers if you get in. Course you probably already know this but what the heck....

I didn't get any form, just a letter so far. The letter said more stuff's coming in. I left a message at the College of Liberal Arts, so, I'll find out what this is all about soon, hopefully...

HW- did you receive this as part of your acceptance letter? We are waiting to hear about Schreyers, does anyone know when those notices will be sent out?

heavenwood. The scholarship form is on line. All scholarships from the liberal arts college are given out by filling out this form on line. They don't send it to you.
Go to college of Liberal arts page, prospective students then look for scholarship form. I can't get the link to work.

The university does have merit scholarships. Many of these are given out by the college you apply to. Some of these have on line forms to fill out before they consider you others just come in a letter after your acceptance (sometimes before:)).

You have to investigate the colleges web site. Good Luck. It will be interesting to hear what the program is that they have offered you...pretty cool.

I have made the assumption you applied to the college of liberal arts .....

HeavenWood-- I got the same letter and was just as baffled as you are. I searched the website and couldn't find a thing, so once you find out about this Academic Promise business, please post everything you know =)

Why does it seem like PSU is not replying to their emails? I emailed the engineering grad school dept, PSU admissions, eliving, and have not yet gotten one reply. What is going on?

lil_killer
When did you email those departments? Yesterday was a holiday and today was the first day of classes for the new semester. I am assuming a large portion of the staff in various areas are going to be quite busy this week. I would suggest either waiting until next week for a reply. If your question needs immediate attention, I would suggest calling.

lil- killer - I second the tip to call instead of email. I have been very impressed with the response time and friendliness of the admin staff at PSU. Bursars, Residence Hall, Dining etc. We did have a little trouble with emailing someone at a school once - and a call took care of it. Be aware of times that school is out though - the staff go on vacation too (MLK day after a long break would be one of those times - and it might take them a while to catch up )

The mystery is solved! I received my follow-up letter today.

"As a benefit for your being part of the Academic Promise group in the College of Liberal Arts, you have qualified to receive a $1500 grant to help defray costs associated with your study abroad experience assuming you maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and that you continue to enroll in Liberal Arts. You can apply this $1500 toward tuition, living expenses, air fare, and/or books associated with your study abroad program."
