Do you feel that the first-year seminars are benefical?

I took a FYSE that was highly writing-intensive, with a literary, cinematic, art/art history focus. We went on a field trip to NYC, where the professor himself led a museum tour just for us. One of the best classes I’ve taken at the college. The quality of your experience will depend on your professor.

I am interested in using the Five College Consortium. Do many students actually take advantage of this?

Yes.

What is the average class size?

Amherst College;

The College’s main page tells you.

How does the open curriculum works without distribution requirements? Do you like this system?

Major requirements. You have to declare at least one major, and fulfill the major’s requirements. The system benefits those who are genuinely intellectually curious and have a strong, well-defined set of interests. Yes, I do, because most distribution requirements these days are BS anyway. Imagine being forced to take Physics for Poets, Rocks for Jocks, or Literature for Dummies.

Some of the other posts talk about a lot of drug use. How common is it?

Marijuana, sure. Hard drugs, no.

**Finally, what attracted you to attend Amherst and stay at there? **

It was the best school, in every single respect, that accepted me. I decided to stay because I appreciated the significant amount of personal attention I got from faculty and administrators.
