Academic Renewal AFTER Sending in UC Application?

So, when I first started attending community college in Fall 2011, I was a HORRIBLE student. I simply didn't care about my education, and I had no idea what I wanted to do in life. For three straight semesters (Fall 2011-Fall 2012), I failed at least one class (failed 3 in the last semester), and was put on Academic Dismissal. I was a complete mess.

After some much needed time off, I did a lot of maturing and decided to go back to school. I attended another local CC in Fall 2013, and finished the semester with a 3.2 GPA with 14 completed units (never done that before). Now that I am used to being back in school, I'm starting to get involved in more extracurriculars and I am looking into doing some volunteer work in addition to my part time job. For the first time, I am actually enjoying my time in college, and I am putting in the work.

The problem is that all those "F's" from my previous CC are still there. I asked a counselor from my first CC if I can just retake the courses at my current college, and I was told no. Since I already have a loaded schedule for the Spring, I can not go back to my old CC and retake 17 units worth of courses. However, I later found out about Academic Renewal.

That college (LA Valley College) requires that I have a minimum 2.0 GPA with my last 30 units of coursework, and that 2 full years have passed since I received those "F"s. While the units/GPA won't be a problem for me, the "over 2 years" thing is what scares me.

After this Spring, I will be able to eliminate 2 of those "F's" (8 units) from my GPA via Academic Renewal. However, it's those Fall 2012 classes that are killing me. I won't be eligible for Academic Renewal for those classes until AFTER Fall 2014, but I am planning to apply to UC's in Fall 2014.

Do you think there is anything I can do in this situation? I have been working very hard, and I don't want those 3 Fail's to cause my GPA to plummet when the time comes for my UC applications, and I don't want to stay in CC for an extra year just so I can make up courses that don't even count towards my major and/or my required general education courses.

If I apply for Renewal after Fall 2014, would I be able to update the grades on my UC application afterwards? Would I then have to send all of them my transcripts again?

Please help! I know it's my fault that I received those bad grades in the first place. However, I have been working hard to get back on track. Any thoughts?

Hi!

I’m probably the answer you’ve been looking for! I applied to transfer this past fall 2013 and had 3 Fs from 2011. I was not eligible for AR until winter session started ( 2 full years to pass) I got academic renewal on 1/7/14, and the grades are now removed. I had sent
an email to UCLA informing them of my intention to apply for the AR process around early December 2013, and they replied saying that if I got AR to mention the updated GPA/coursework on the “transfer update” which opens up on early January. I think you’ll be good!!!

Thank you so much!!!

So basically, the online application gives you the option to put “AR” for a course grade? Did you have to send out your transcripts for them to verify the AR, or do you only have to send them out if you are admitted?

From what I’ve read, you only send in transcripts once you’re accepted. And yes the uc app gives you an option to put AR. BUT at the time of the application I did not put AR I put the “F grades” to ensure a TRUE and COMPLETE transcript at the time I was applying. The transfer update has a little box where you can mention these “additional comments”. You could also always send an email to each individual UC Campus informing of this change. Either way hope is not lost. Personally, most of my counselors were horrible but I owe a lot to this forum… consulting and finding a good counselor is better. In the words of Tupac, “you gotta smile through all the bs”. We got this.

Oh alright, seems pretty simple and straight forward.

Yeah, my LAVC counselors were not helpful AT ALL, with the exception of one. I can’t make an “in-person” appointment until they receive my transcript from my current CC (and they take forever) so I was forced to email them my questions.

I asked them if I could change the F’s to AR on the UC transfer application, and all they did was copy/paste the school’s AR eligibility requirements (which was available on the website) into the email and write “hope this helps” at the end. I felt like throwing my monitor out the window…

Good luck!!!

Haha thnx good luck to u too!
