Academic Renewal at a CC

I'm currently at UC Irvine and I have around 10 classes left before graduation. Two of these are lower GEs I still need to complete, so I'm planning to take them at my local CC (El Camino).

Now the problem is, I took a class there when I was in 11th grade in 2007 for fun and kicks to see what the college life would be like and for high school credit. Soon, I forgot about this class in order to concentrate on my AP courses and I received an F.

I'm returning to my CC this summer to take two classes and after I finish, the grade from 2007 will show up on the transcript and I'm not sure what's going to happen at this point.

Since my CC history has one class on the transcript, am I eligible for academic renewal? Will UC Irvine compute the 2007 class into my cumulative GPA?

*I know this is in the wrong area but since this section is so populated I'm hoping someone can help me out

the UC schools do not take the grades you receive at other schools (except UC campuses) into account when computing GPA.

Did you enter UCI as a freshman or a junior transfer from a cc? Either way, if you received an F from a cc and it was never reported to UCI when you applied there and this will be the first they have heard about it there could be some serious repercussions.

No, I entered out of high school. (yes, I know this is the wrong section to post in)

It was the only class I took at a CC but that was intended for high school credit.

I am an academic renewal guru…You can wipe off those grades from 2007…I am currently applying to uc’s and states right now but had an abysmal cc transcript that dated all the way back to 2002 that spanned 4 different community colleges…I literally wiped off years of F’s and D’s from my gpa with academic renewal and am getting acceptances as I write this…my cumulative GPA at one point was below 1 and barely above 0…Because of academic renewal, I was able to raise my cum gpa to over 3.5 .

Academic Renewal is a god-send and you should definitely take full advantage of it…It is EXTREMELY worth…essentially a gift to erase past wrongs. I wiped out 24 semester units at one cc and 18 semester units at another…go get the AR sheet at your college…fill it out…get your transcripts…visit/mail the counseling office at the school where you want to wipe the grades…it takes a little of effort but is so so worth it.

You should be able to wipe the CC class with academic renewal. It’s been years since you’ve taken the class so there shouldn’t be a problem. But that’s hardly the point.

UCI will not take the grade for that class into consideration when calculating your GPA. Your UCI GPA is completely separate from your CC GPA. Credits from a CC may transfer and they can also be used to fulfill GE requirements. But even if they are transferrable, only the course title itself will be posted on your transcript. There will never be a CC grade on your UCI transcript and it will never be weighted into your UCI GPA.

Your CC GPA will undeniably go up or disappear though (depending on how many classes you took at your CC). So it’s still a good idea to use academic renewal for your CC transcripts in case you apply for grad school or jobs that require them.

@TurnTile: Please listen… carefully. Lemaitre1 aptly pointed out a gaping flaw in your plans. You were required to give transcripts from ALL schools attended when you applied to UCI (even as a freshman). The university would be within its rights to expel you for failing to report these grades. You were obviously not selected for closer initial scrutiny during your application process, which is good as El Camino is a reporting college for the National Student Clearinghouse.

I can’t believe that I’m actually advising this, (but it truly seems as though you failed to report the grade through a misunderstanding of application protocols). You should NOT take courses at your previous cc. The transcript, with the previous failing mark (which will still remain on your transcript even if it is granted academic renew), might alert UCI to the failure to report. Find another cc close by to take the courses at.

As to the academic renewal; you would need to look at El Camino’s standards to determine if you would qualify for renewal as you have not attended for quite a number of years.
