I have an F on my transcript for a course that I did not major in. I do not plan on retaking the class, unless something crazy happens and I'm stuck at FJC for one more year. I plan on having to take that course I got an F in at the school I transfer to (I am likely changing majors back to what I used to be).
Should I do academic renewal to erase that F? Will that F transfer to my gpa at my new school (hopefully UCI)?

Reasons I should get academic renewal: I will (officially) qualify for all the scholarships requiring 3.0 gpa. I currently have a 2.98. May help me get a specific internship for this summer.

I will be transferring Fall 2011. I wanted to eventually retake the class, but made some poor scheduling choices last two semesters. It probably is a little late for it to affect the internship as it is being turned in today, as was the scholarship forms.

My first quarter at CC I got 2 F’s and a W. I retook the 2 F’s the next quarter and have gotten straight A’s since, but that first quarter looks awful on my transcript.

Does anyone know how well academic renewal works?

Like, will it really turn all the grades for that quarter to “AR” (Academic Renewal) on my official transcript for graduate/med/whatever school?

Or does it just use AR when factoring my CC GPA and still reveal the grades whenever someone comes asking (on official matters)?

I did an academic renewal at my college and it only wiped that one grade, not all of the classes I had that semester. You have to petition for it and they only “alleviate” substandard grades (D, F and NP) so they wouldn’t wipe an A off your transcripts just because you took it the same semester. You should see a councilor, or the admin office.

Is FJC Fullerton college? If it is then their policy is, and i quote from their 2010-2011 catalog,

"The Academic Renewal Procedure (51318, California Administrative
Code) permits the alleviation of a student’s previouslyrecorded
substandard academic performance which is not
reflective of the student’s present demonstrated ability and level
of performance. As a consequence, Academic Renewal may
gain for students the benefits of their current level of ability and
performance and not permanently penalize them for poor performance
in the past.
Therefore, within the regulations listed, Fullerton College may
disregard particular previously recorded substandard work from
a student’s cumulative grade point average.
The regulations for course alleviation follow:

Only units taken at Fullerton College may be alleviated, not
units taken from another college(s). The maximum number
of units that may be alleviated is 24.

A minimum of twelve (12) units must be completed at any
accredited college or university, with a grade point average
of 2.5 in all units since the last semester of requested renewal.

A minimum of 12 months must have elapsed since the most
recent coursework to be alleviated was recorded.

Courses that meet the present educational goals of the
students and are appropriate for repetition may be exempt
from consideration for alleviation.

Courses used in awarding an Associate Degree cannot be
alleviated.

A student may be granted academic renewal only once and
is irreversible once posted to the transcript.

Academic renewal by Fullerton College does not guarantee
that other institutions outside the District will approve such
action. This determination will be made by the respective
transfer institutions.

Only substandard grades (D, F, NP) can be alleviated.

Recording of Academic Renewal:When academic work is alleviated, grades are not removed. They are noted and subtracted from the grade point average. All entries remain legible so that a true and complete recordis maintained. There is no assurance that alleviated courses will
be treated similarly by other educational institutions outside the
District."

Not all CCCs have the same academic renewal policy, neverneverland and blkbox. Some do take out entire semesters/quarters. Others will allow you to pick and choose which class, but will drastically limit the number of units you can do this to. That’s why it always helps to read your particular CCC’s policy and not to assume everywhere else is the same.
