Academic Renewal

I got two Cs in community college classes. It says on my CC's website that both the old and new grade will show up on my transcript after academic renewal. However the new grade will be used in calculating my GPA. Do the UCs calculate my GPA according to this new grade. How does this work?

You are not allowed to retake a C. A C stays with you forever. And yeah, they factor in the newer, better grade but it is still noted that you received a D/F in the same class before… I think.

If you could renew, then yeah, they only counted the new grades and the old one would be sent to hell…

Having said that, I agree with iwillflyby that you are not allowed to renew couple of C’s. If you could do that, and every one else could do that, this world would only consist of A’s people and everyone would go to Stanford or Harvard ;)

Yeah. The CC offers a Special Academic Renewal Petition and if approved it allows you to retake courses in courses that you got Cs in. I suffered from viral infection the summer I took the classes and provided medical proof of it. It was denied but I have an appointment scheduled with the dean and am still fighting for it. Hopefully things work out.

Really? Then good luck man! Since you do not deserve to have these two C’s, I hope that you will be able to get the renewal :)

Now if you had also received a D in a course for the same quarter/semester you would have been better off. Many (but not all) cc’s drop all classes taken for the quarter/semester if academic renewal is granted. You would have been free to retake all the courses.

Yes I wasn’t aware of that at the time. =
Thanks snipehunter.

So, does anyone know anything about this “special” academic renewal for replacing C grades?

Academic renewal is for classes that are a least 2 years old

With Academic renewal the grade is erased and replaced with AR so the units nor the grade factor into your GPA.

I think you are talking about retaking a class to replace the grade with a higher one. I know at my CC under special circumstances you can petition to retake a grade of a C but it’s rare. If you do get approved, you still list the original grade on your application. Then you list the new grade and there should be an option from the drop down menu that gives you the option to choose replacement. Then you choose the class it is replacing. After that UC will only take into account the replacement grade to calculate your GPA.

Hope that helps?

Uh, does anyone else remember that the UC only counts the repeated grade? Doesn’t seem to me like academic renewal changes a thing…
