Academic Requirements for MT Majors

My s is at mPulse 2013 & fell in love with UofM! He said that of the 40 kids that went to mPulse 2012 only 3 were accepted to the university! YIKES! He has taken ballet for 5 years, plays piano, strong vocals & has been in 13 productions - including some leads & commercials. He has been at Stage Door Manor & Interlochen & he has a monolog/audition coach; so I think he is set on the audition side. HOWEVER, what about academics - are the Michigan high academic standard the same for musical theatre/school of music students that they are for an engineering student (for example)? Concerned about his 26 ACT score

No its not the same. I believe for MT this past year it was 24 for the ACT. I found it on their website when looking last year

This is from their website
We expect freshman applicants to achieve the following:

Graduation from an accredited high school.
GPA of 3.0 or better (calculated using unweighted grades in all subjects taken from 9th-11th grade.)
Completion of the SAT with Writing or the ACT with Writing. Minimum score requirements are: ACT of 24 or better or SAT of 1100 or better in the Critical Reading and Math, or SAT of 1650 or better including Writing. Please note that the University does not accept rush scores. We require official test scores, sent to us by the agency; test scores included with a transcript are not sufficient. The Bachelor of Science in Sound Engineering requires a GPA of 3.5, an SAT math sub score of 630 or better, or an ACT math sub score of 28 or better.
If you are a homeschooled or charter school student, you should submit records of your schooling progress AND results from at least two (2) SAT II exams and the SAT I writing test. If you’d like to talk with someone, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (734.764.7433) to discuss your qualifications for admission.
General high school curriculum requirements demonstrated on an official transcript:
Academic: Four years of English, plus a minimum of 12 other year-long courses selected from social studies, foreign languages, sciences, mathematics or any combination of these subjects. 2 years of foreign language study is strongly recommended.
Performing Arts: Credits in music, theatre, and/or dance demonstrating experience and potential ability to succeed in the professional curriculum.

While it may be true that the academic minimums are lower to pass the MT academic part of the prescreen and be invited to audition, that is not the end of it… At the audition, candidates are scored separately in the area of dance, voice and acting - those scores then go back to the SMTD’s own Department of Admissions where those scores and all other admission materials (GPA, test scores, LOR, essays, phase of the moon, etc) are weighed not by the MT faculty, but by the dean of admissions for SMTD who makes the final call on who is admitted and who is not. That is not to say that kids with lower academic stats won’t get in, but it will be much more of a stretch. For Michigan, a 26 ACT is going to be on the lower end, even for SMTD.

Agree with post #4

^ this is also the SMTD overall info for 2013 – in terms of averages…lower than typical UMich stats, but notably not really anywhere near as low as their academic cutoffs:

Average GPA 3.68
4.0 GPA - 14.6%
Average SAT score 1971 (Critical Reading + Math + Writing)
Average ACT score 29

I know this post is a few months old, but just thought I’d let you know that my D got into the SMTD with a 3.7 GPA and 24 ACT. So yes it does happen! The audition is key.

saxlady - Is your daughter an MT? If not, what major?

No, she’s Voice Performance, which is just as competitive.
