Hey, I was wondering how common non-need based scholarships are, and some of the different qualifications for them. Have you heard of students getting a full-ride (or a big %)?

Yes, I know three people who are on a full-ride to Tufts thanks to non-need based aid. These are scholarships not based on need, but on other qualifications. You can't apply for them -- the admissions committee keeps an eye out for people who fulfill the requirements of each scholarship (i.e. one especially for Eastern Europeans or pre-vet students or civically engaged people, etc). However, you can't bank on it as you can't specifically apply for one.

pamplemoose ive seen this thread in like every college forum. haha.

I'm really surprised to hear that. I was under the impression that there were no non-need based scholarships to Tufts other than the National Merit Scholarships which my daughter receives. I think I've heard that after you've been at Tufts for a while there are some merit scholarships that are available for qualified students.
Lolabelle - do you have any other information on these scholarships?

Yeah, someone at my school too received a scholarship from Tufts a few years back.

They're endowed scholarships. Let's say Alum '54, now an environmental engineering tycoon in Hungary, wants to see a Hungarian study environmental engineering. That money goes to one student who fulfills the requirements (environmental engineerging + Hungarian) every year, etc.

You'll see in this list that there's everything for male undergrads from Waltham, Mass. to the type of scenario I described above.

Thanks for posting that. I thought I had seen that somewhere.

For some students receiving financial aid from Tufts as grants, the scholarships probably makes no difference in the total aid package. I know someone at Tufts who got a scholarship, which simply replaced a portion of his grants from Tufts.

How do current Jumbos receive these scholarships? Are there separate applications for each? Does your department nominate you?

You can't apply for them. The adcom knows about each grant and knows to look for candidates that would fulfill the requirements. If you're lucky, you'll get one. Otherwise, you'll just get regular finaid, if you qualify.
