Hello,
I am currently a Sophomore in a four year institution and have recently fell on difficult times grades wise. I am also on academic probation and my greatest fear is not meeting GPA requirements and being placed on academic suspension. If I do not meet requirements I would like to go to a community college to take some course. If I do so will I be eligible for federal aid? If so, Is there anything special I have to do?

Thank you

You need a certain % of completed credits to your attempted credits. If you are on academic probation and continue not to complete credits, I do not believe you will be eligible for aid. However, if you complete your attempted credits at the community college, that should remove you from probation.

Thank you emeraldkity4, but I was asking would I be eligible for aid if I switch schools after an suspension.

It will carry over to your next school. If does not matter where you are attending, if you are not passing this term and making progress, it is unlikely that you will be eligible for federal aid at your next school. You may end up getting by in the spring, but evenutally you will owe your new school money (after they recover the aid) and you will not be able to regisiter until you pay the balance.

This isn’t related to financial aid, but would you return to your current school after the suspension? Check your school’s policy on granting credit for courses taken elsewhere during a suspension. At my son’s school, courses taken at other institutions while a student is on suspension (academic, disciplinary, or honor) are not accepted for transfer credit and will not fulfill any degree requirement.
