Quick question, when filling out the course work in the online application, it asks to specify the course level when adding classes. I'm not quite sure what the difference between Academic, Honors, and Standard courses?

My school follows block scheduling, so most classes are one semester long, minus the AP classes which are two semesters, going every other day.

The honors classes would obviously be Honors courses, but what about PE Class for example?

Or Special Interest Science Honors? Note: This class is every other day, paired up with AP Chem, but it's basically AP Chemistry.

What about Academic Seminar from my Junior year?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Andrew

I would suggest that you talk to your high school guidance counselor about this. You could also call or email your NCSU Admissions rep for clarification. PE is most likely a ‘standard’ course among the choices you’ve listed.

I agree with asking your counselor. You are a NC resident right? Each year, many students from your school apply to NCSU, and so NCSU is likely to be very familiar with your high school as well as NC graduation requirements and they will not penalize you for taking them instead of an academic class. Every applicant from NC will have taken those same classes.

Be honest and factual. Know that they will check your info with your transcript. Double check this but this is a likely categorization:
AP classes are designated as AP and they are weighted. Honors classes are designated as that and are also weighted. You can see on your transcript how each class is weighted. AP is generally weighted higher than honors. Standard classes are unweighted. Academic classes can also be unweighted. The difference is between the content. Something like English and Math are academic. Electives like PE are not.

PE is Standard
Special interest Science Honors is Honors- check to see if it is weighted to be sure.
If Academic Seminar is Honors it would be weighted. If it is a general class that all students at your school take and is not weighted, then it is Standard or Academic. The difference would be in the content. If it is an intro to high school class with study skills and other topics, it is probably Standard. If it is a seminar where you discuss articles and other information sources, write papers or present projects, it would be Academic. This one you should consult your counselor for as every student from your school should categorize this one the same.

Thank you a ton for you detailed explanation!

Special Interest Science Honors has no weight on GPA at all, it only counts for a credit. Why is because AP Courses at my school go on an A/B day schedule for 2 semester. Spec. Intrst Sci Honors is paired with AP Chemistry and AP Biology on their opposite days, but it is NOT its own class. It is paired with those two AP Sciences so students may attend the classes A and B day.

Academic Seminar is ONLY taken at my school by students who have AP Classes and do not have a matching AP Class so they have courses all periods both A and B day. It also holds NO GPA weight, only a credit.

Although they seem to fit as as honors classes, to be consistent with other applicants from your school, I would ask the guidance counselor about this one. You don’t want to have mistakenly not list them correctly.
