Alright, so unfortunately they DO transfer. The good thing is I got Fs so I don’t receive unit/credit for them. The bad thing is I got Fs so they drill a hole in my gpa and I can’t retake them.
Apparently I can apply for Academic Renewal, but I got confused with that and Academic Withdrawal. And I’m still confused about AR because I don’t know the reasons I should be putting when I file AR. Academic Withdrawal replaces everything with Ws for extenuating circumstances, but there was no extenuating circumstance unless depression is one, but I never really saw a doctor or anything. So I don’t have much evidence.
So the 9 units of F do not count toward the unit cap because they do not transfer over as credit?
Academic renewal would replace all your grades with AR. Schools that honor AR would not factor the courses in your grade. Schools that do not honor AR, like USC, would still count in the Fs.
Academic Withdrawal would be better because it would replace all the grades with W so all schools would honor that.
I don’t know the ins and outs of your CCC, but it takes a certain amount of time for the AR to show up, usually a minimum of a year. If it’s doable, you need to get on it right now, and a problem may be that the required year for AR transfer will be AFTER next year’s TAU deadline, meaning the Fs will stay in the TAU through Jan 31, although you can update through March and send out AR notifications.
You can have any reason for AR, you just weren’t ready, outside forces, etc.
Yes, I called two other reps just to confirm (One at Irvine and one at Davis). If you get a F, you don’t get any credit so it doesn’t count toward the unit cap.
Another thing they told me was that as someone mentioned here before, you can take as many lower-division courses as you want but they’ll cap it at 70, then the rest is for upper-division (Davis told me I can’t have more than or equal to 15 units of upper-division courses or I would be ineligible) I did tell them that I was going from CSU to CC to UC.
But you said that since I did attend a CSU, I’m not subject to the 70 lower division unit cap. I’m confused now.
@lindyk8
I’m going to be applying for the Fall of 2016. If I file for AR or AW, it says I need to get like evidence of the extenuating circumstances. Hopefully I don’t get denied. It says they’ll disregard one semester.
eauighaeuighaeuigh AND I STILL HAVEN’T ENROLLED IN CC COURSES YET BECAUSE IM PARANOID OF THIS O:<
I don’t know what CSU you went to and if AR rules differ, but the one I just looked at said five years had to have transpired and that another session at the CSU had to be undertaken.
They’ll will cap your lower-division units at 70 [combo of CSU + CC] and then add any upper-division (CSU) units on top of that to determine your total transfer units.
Thank you for clarifying. I won’t have any problems with the unit cap then.
@lindyk8
My CSU is SDSU. It says in their policies that they may disregard one (1) semester when you file for AR, but to disregard two (2) or more semesters, there needs to be at least a five (5) years gap. So I believe I can file for AR right now as long as I think up a good persuasive argument for them not to deny.
Actually that makes me wonder now. If I’m capped at 70 units/credits for lower division classes no matter how many I take, does that mean I can go absolute ham on UC- transferable courses to raise my GPA?
Because if I get my AR denied, then like @bomerr said, I’m dropping under 3.0 which is unacceptable. So if I CAN take a lot more units, I have a lot of opportunities to get back into track since I have Spring 2015, Summer 2015, Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Summer 2016, Fall 2016. Right?
So you are going from the low-acceptance to the medium acceptance of mid-tier UCs and still well below the average for UCLA/Cal. In essence there is no point in delaying transfer for a year just to try and improve your GPA. Marginal cost not worth the benefit.
Assuming you get AR for one semester, those grades are cleared and units aren’t counted. So let’s forget about them for now. Just deduct them.
How many lower division units do you still need to retake after AR is applied? (I assume they are all D or F.)
How many upper division classes are remaining, and what are the grades?
EDIT: ok, I see you have:
31.5 at 3.7 from CCC
3 from USC - GPA?
37 are from CSU. Of these, how many can get AR, how many can be repeated, how many remaining after AR and repeat?
Would admissions be mad if they see that I took an extra year to increase my GPA? Anyways the problem is I can’t complete IGETC, repeat failed grades, and major pre reqs by the end of Fall 2015.
I need 35 units to complete IGETC and Repeat Failed classes. If I apply as a mathematics major, however, I already knocked out Linear Algebra and Discrete Math in High School. I took an Differential Equation class at CSU too, so I might be good on pre-reqs.
Also I hate math. So if I do get into a UC with a mathematics major, can I switch to Comp Sci? I’m more engaging with CS courses but I didn’t take as many CS courses as math.
@Virilux
You have until Spring 2016 to complete all your pre-reqs for Fall 16 enrollment. Although the low/mid-tier UCs might allow you take courses in Summer 16. You want to complete repeats by Fall 15 tho so they are reflected in your transfer GPA. Don’t forget, you have Winter 16 as well to take courses.
5 semesters total.
You won’t be able to change your major from math to comp sci after transferring.
On a personal note. I got As in Calc 1 and 2 and then realized that mathematical proofs while cool were not something I am great at doing. So I can understand why you would chose not to do math major. Perhaps pick a different path with less pre-reqs. I decided to do Accounting instead because it still involves math but without any proofs.
I think @bomerr is 100% correct. Not only does math have a lot of pre-reqs, you don’t even like it. General wisdom is don’t major in something you don’t like.
CSU: 21 units @ 2.69 <–Unrepeatables
AR: 15 units @ 0.94 <this is what will disappear if AR is accepted, if not accepted CSU is 21 units @ 2.84
3 units @ 0.00 <upper division not AR-able.
USC: 3 units@ 3.70
CCC: 31.5 units@3.70 ==Total== IF AR: 58.5 units @ 3.147 IF NOT AR: 64.5 units @ 2.90
Repeat:22 units @??? =Total (assuming As) = IF AR: 93.5 units @ 3.466 IF NOT AR: 99.5 units @ 3.286
IGETC:13 units @??? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It’s too hard balancing 2 hard classes (calc + science/english) with 3 GEs a semester; 15-19 units total.
Slightly more difficult is 2 courses in the summer or winter; 6-8 units.
If you go back to your CC then you should have priority registration for the summer and onward periods.
So getting classes this spring should be the only real challenge.
If you are seriously getting 35+ units should be no problem.
Trying to juggle this, I see a couple of big problems: your unit count is over assuming you are adding 35 courses, plus counting the 21 units from CSU. So, somehow you gotta shave some units off.
Next, the GPA is low for heavy hitters, but is possibly doable for some, as bomerr repeatedly noted. :).
The positive is the UCs will be impressed with your can do, never give up spirit,…
So why are these 21 units unrepeatable? What are they?
Also, I’m basing this all on AR going through and hopefully upper division not transferable. It seems to me you can get a good idea of its transferability by looking at upper division UC courses.
You might be better served finding a major without a lot of pre-reqs and trying to switch, if need be, after you get in. As long as the major you want isn’t impacted, you can usually do it. Your unit count could end up being the big deal-breaker.
My unit count shouldn’t matter because it is capped at 70 for lower-division classes. So supposedly, I can take as many lower-division classes as I can. The only thing that counts passed 70 are upper-division courses (3 units with AR and 9 without AR).
Those 21 units are unrepeatable because I received a C or better in those classes.
@bomerr
What’s really weird is I did do that to one of my classes. The intermediate class I got an A-, but the introductory I got a D which is almost laughable, but I did take them at the same time. So I’m just going to repeat it just because I don’t think the admissions would like to see someone fail a intro course but do well on the next course in line.
Also, I can’t take any more math classes at CC because I took the highest level equivalent at CSU (Differential Eq.), I THINK I can take statistics though, because all I did was take the AP statistics test and got credit on that. And in that video you linked, they say they want to “advantage the applicant as much as much as they can”. So I’m not even sure anymore.
