Academics and Athletics

How are Penn State's premed programs and soccer teams? What majors do they offer in premed (i.e. Neuro, Biochem, Anat. & Phys...etc)? Are there teams D1, D2, D3, or a combination?

The sciences at PSU are very good, especially their Chem, Immunology, Toxicology, and Ag departments.

It varies by sport. PSU itself is referred to as a “D1” school because of its football and baketball programs. However, not every sport is a D1 sport. You would have to check the individual sport you were interested in.

Does PSU offer Neuro or Biochem for undergraduate study? I’ll find information on PSU soccer. Thanks man.

I’m pretty sure all the the varsity sports at Penn State (and all BCS type schools) are all D1

There is a Biochemistry and Molec Bio major (BMB) and there is a nuero option in the Biology major.

3togo, thanks for the information.

Cwryan1, the neuro option is a major and not just a course right?

It is an option within a major. Check out the requirements here http://www.bio.psu.edu/degrees/uao/form_proc/files/neuro2007.pdf</a>
You take several upper level courses focused on neurobio etc and then take supporting courses to backup the things you learn.

and you can find the name of some of the biology course numbers here: [University Bulletin: University Course Descriptions](http://bulletins.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/university_course_descriptions.cfm?letter=B&dept=BIOL)

I believe that there is also a nuero option in the psych major. But I am not familiar with it.

3togo: I know that ice hockey is not a D1 sport. The athletic department has been trying for years to build a new ice rink in hopes of moving up to a D1 sport. Also, not every sport at Penn State participates in the same NCAA conference as the football and basketball teams.

Cwryan1, I’ll be sure to look at those links because I am very interested in neuro.

Stealthx, What do you mean by “not every sport at Penn State[…]as the football and basketball teams?”

Stealthx - All the VARSITY sports at PSU are Div 1. Hockey and several other sports are club teams, not varsity.

QuietType, do you know what the varsity sports are?

[Penn State University’s Official Athletic Site](http://www.gopsusports.com/)

Read all about it.

I am a BMB major and can answer any specific questions you may have about BMB, Biology, Chemistry, BBH, etc especially with regards to being a premed. Feel free to PM me.

psu2806, I have changed my choice to major in biomedical engineering. How difficult is it at PSU? Does it have any special requirements? I know BME is one of the most prestigious majors med schools look at. Also, I’m actually interested because of the different subjects studied and how medicine and engineering combine together to help people live more comfortable lives.
