Academics and student life

Hey, just a few questions for current Johns Hopkins students

How's your experience been on class size?

How is Baltimore as a city? Do social events occur mostly on or off campus?

How's dorm life, and is housing guaranteed?

Is there a place for liberal arts majors, or is JHU really mostly all pre-med? Or rather, is there a place for those who are looking for a non pre-professional education, or is the school focused on preparing their students for careers?

Thanks in advance!

-Class size depends on what level classes you take. Most intro level classes are large lectures. Most upper level classes are smaller--many of them are seminars.

-This has been discussed ad nauseum. Check the "search" function.

-Housing is guaranteed for freshman and sophomore year, although they are currently renovating 2 older apartment buildings that the university just acquired. If you end up having to find a place, there are many apartment buildings literally across the street from campus (many of which are very nice) and these sometimes end up being less expensive than university housing. Housing isn't really that big of an issue anymore.

-Many of Hopkins' grads go on to non-professional ventures. Many go on to work or graduate school (Ph.D, Masters). Also, Johns Hopkins has some incredibly strong liberal arts programs. Writing seminars is the best in the nation (or #2 according to some) English, History, Art History, History of Science, Political Science (theory), International relations, French are all considered among the best (top 10, top 5 in some cases) in their field. Also, Hopkins has its own conservatory--Peabody. As for the overall student body, about 1/3 majors in Natural/Physical Sciences, 1/3 in Humanities and Social Sciences and 1/3 in Engineering.

I'd suggest you check out Hopkins Interactive where you can get a lot of these questions answered through the blogs and message boards:http://apply.jhu.edu/hi/. You can also post questions for a group of more than 20 current students to answer on the JHU Forums: http://apply.jhu.edu/forums/.

Class size
Average class is 19 for all classes
51% of classes are less than 20 students
only 7% of classes are larger than 100 students

Baltimore
Check this discussion forum ... lots of topics about Baltimore and what there is to do: http://z14.invisionfree.com/Hopkins_Forums/index.php?showforum=16

Dorm Life
An extensive housing thread:
http://z14.invisionfree.com/Hopkins_Forums/index.php?showtopic=212
Housing is guaranteed and required for the first two years. There are options for on-campus housing for juniors and seniors now too.

Liberal Arts
Absolutely there is a place. More than 50% of students at JHU do not pursue science nor tech programs. Only about 25% will apply to medical school.
