What exchange programs does the AFA offer? What other nations have similar institutions as the Academy?

If you are a Foreign Area Studies major, and you want to, you have a good shot at visiting for a few weeks in the summer, or for a semester abroad (you study at a university in the area you have your major in).

Also, usually people who are pretty good at a foreign language (and usually minoring in it) have the opportunity (if they want it) to go at visit in the summer or spend a semester abroad.

So yes, there are a couple of different ways to do it. There are also a couple of other programs here that offer similar opportunities.

if you do not wish to go foreign, the academies (USAFA, USMA, USNA, and USCGA) offer semester exchanges with each other during your 2 dig year.

foreighn ones i know of: Spain, Chile and Argentina (one they have, the other they're working on, i forget which is which), France, Germany. i believe China has one too but its to a "normal" college, not military

Also, you can attend the National Defense Academy in Japan for a semester (looks strikingly like USAFA actually).

As an aside, my dad dated a female (do I really have to say that?) USAFA exchange cadet many years ago when he was at USCGA. The program sounds like a good deal, but I wouldn't want to be the Navy guy at USAFA the week they play each other, or vice versa!

Let me add one more to the list - my current squad comm spent last semester in Russia. And that's definitely true zach, exchange cadets are always the subject of some good-natured ribbing. :)

Just to clarify, you don't spend the semester at a russian military school. You actually live with a russian family and go to a civillian school while there.

Дос ВеданЯ

So, they don't give you any interaction with Russian military students? That would be one of the most fun parts in my opinion.

ZMAN, привет! Как ты?

That's Russian by the way, in case anyone is curious. I said "hi", and "how are you?".

I'm pretty sure ZMAN is right. Typically, you could go to school in Moscow or St Petersburg through the Russian semester abroad program.

My husband and I have both entered St. Petersburg (really, Russia in general) on our Bucket List. LOL Now we know where to go for our interpreter! :) :)

Actually, if you make either me or Falcons 11 your interpreter, we will only be able to tell the russians stuff like
"Hello, how are you? I have 2 sisters. The picture is hanging on the wall."

But, you never know when you may need that.

Falcon and Zman Вы говорите на русском языке, I only used it once in my AF career. We had an IL-62 leaking fuel in front of the tower and I told the Russian Flight Engineer to get outside the airplanes circle of safety. Bought me a couple hours with an OSI agent explaining where I learned russian.

I am considering a possible minor in russian, (iam in my 4th year in high school). Can anyone shed any light there? Just general info and the study abroad sounds like a great idea as well...

I understand that "critical" languages like Arabic will give speakers a hefty bonus, but what about a language like German?

All languages except Spanish receive bonuses. Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese are "strategic" languages which earn a larger bonus. HOWEVER, having the minor alone won't guarantee the bonus, you must get a certain score on the DoD language test for that language.

A minor in Russian (or any language here except Spanish) requires 4 semesters at or above the 200 level. So, if you test into a higher course, the path is Russian 221, 222, 321, 322. If starting fresh, it goes 131,132, 221, 222, 321, 322.

Ugh Russian :( You people...

information on the exchange program and the different countries that are involved is on the academy website which can be very useful ;p

Ya Knee Pah-nee Mayooh Krasknee Golavah - Redhead

or Я не понимаю краснокожего for Falcon and Z-man

Вот как!! Actually redhead could probably speak more russian than Falcon and me combined. Quelquefois, le francias me manque!

:) ZMAN-je ne manque pas francais, trois ans est suffisants. ;)
