Acadian vs. East Laville

I am strongly considering LSU and was admitted to the honors program. I plan on majoring in business, but would prefer to be in the honors dorms so I can be with more academically motivated students. Can anyone at LSU tell me which of the two honors dorms, Acadian or East Laville, is better?

In addition, I noticed that East Laville has one-person rooms available for the same rate as two-person rooms on the 2009-2010 price sheet. How do the sizes compare?

In addition, does either dorm have any stereotypes associated with it (is one more for studying, another more open, etc.)?

I put my vote for East Laville just because I lived there. . I can’t really give a comparison of the two since I’ve only stepped foot in Acadian once.

I never stepped foot into one of the 1-person bedrooms in East Laville but I did get a look into one as I was walking by on move in day a couple of years ago and to me they seemed tiny. But I guess having the luxury of privacy outweighs that. Plus, I would think that they are hard to get as well (don’t think there are many of them). I would think that unless you had special needs, they would try to put you into one of the 2 or 3 person rooms before they put you into a 1 person room.

You can get a look at the spec sheet here: http://appl003.lsu.edu/slas/reslifeweb.nsf/$Content/Acadian+Hall/$file/Hall_dimensions+new.pdf</a> . It seems that the 1-beds are about half the size of the regular 2-beds.

Though I don’t know any stereotypes per se and things could have changed since I lived there (West Laville was open then), I’ll give what I thought of the place as a whole.

East Laville is lobby people. I could pretty much be there at any time night or day and there would be at least a few people in the lobby. Apparently a few years back when they had the TV up in the lobby, there were people who never left the lobby, hogged the TV, and just watched TV all day in the couch. TV’s now in the basement thankfully.

There used to be a lot people who hung out on the patio, but I’m guessing that may have changed since the West Laville construction took half of the patio away with a fence.

I don’t know how the East laville/Acadian Community Council does it anymore (I haven’t been involved in RHA for about a year now), but when I was apart of the East Laville CC, we used to host most of the programs in the East Laville Lobby. But I don’t know if that’s changed since.

As far as a studying environment, I never thought it was bad. Yeah, there times when the floor might get loud, but nothing too bad. The walls aren’t sound proof, so if you have rowdy neighbors it could be a problem (I had a neighbors who liked to blast the Office, but they would turn it down if need be).

I would say that they both offer the same location benefits as far as campus goes.

I can’t really think of anything else to add at the moment.

You won’t be able to get a 1 person room. I think that’s just for RA’s.

It really doesn’t make much of a difference which one you stay at. I liked the East Laville rooms better because they were a bit bigger, but the difference is minimal.

And don’t think because these are the “honors” dorms there aren’t a bunch of people drinking in their room and stuff. Not a lot of peer pressure though if you want to avoid that kind of stuff.

Not true entirely. When I lived in East Laville, I know that the 1 person bedroom near me wasn’t an RA. My two RAs shared a 3-person bedroom (that’s a lot of room). I think the RAs get choices in the matter for the most part. In ECA, there are some RAs who have the single occupancy apartments and there are some that live with roommates because they chose to.

But I do agree that it’ll be hard to get one without special circumstances.

And yup, like any dorm I think, you’ll have people who have drinks or have illegal substances in their room. It was never a problem for me. I do remember during my stay that a few people were busted throughout the year for weed or other illicit drugs. And one guy I knew personally was caught with alcohol in his room. I think he was placed on academic probation and his scheduling priority was taken away. RAs and RLCs aren’t allowed to open any closets or closed doors (like refrigerators) during safety inspections, so as long as you keep it in there and not have it out, you shouldn’t be caught if you choose to participate in such activities  .
