I have been accepted into the school of nursing, and I have a passion for singing and acting, as well as tennis. As far as intramural goes, I don't feel like playing varsity (too intense, too time consuming) but I do not want to give tennis up entirely. How intense are intramural sports? I also love acting and singing in musicals and would like to audition. Do I have to be a theater major/minor in order to be in the performances or could I just join? And finally, how are the acapella groups at Penn? I if I cannot be in a musical, I would love to join an acapella group. Thanks in advanced :)

My friend goes to Penn and participates/does something important (I think) with the Penn Singers, which is a theater group at the school. They seem pretty open, and I know that you don’t have to be a theater major, because she goes to Wharton. XD

I hope that helps answer part of your question!

Who’s your friend in Singers? Regardless, tell her Glee Club apologizes… we told them they could use our drum set and then realized we needed it for a performance in Washington, DC last night but kinda sorta forgot to tell them… eek.

In any case, I can speak to performing arts at Penn. There are 43 performing arts groups which are unaffiliated with the music department (i.e. fully extra curricular). Each group is unique, but what’s nice is that you can audition for several, get into several and stay in several. Or you can drop some. A couple of my friends do four or more groups! Most common is to do either one or two groups, but whatever works!

When you get to Penn, you’ll go through New Student Orientation – NSO. The following weekend there will be Freshman Performing Arts Night. Every PAC group (PAC = Performing Arts Council = at least partially funded by the University) has a 3 minute time slot to do a performance and impress you. Auditions generally happen the following week. It can be crazy, but there are hundreds of people involved in the performing arts community at Penn, and it’s a great bunch of people!
