Accelerated Masters vs. Easier BS in same time

I go to a top ten ME school and I'm in a weird position. I can graduate with a masters or a BS in 4 years

I'm considering working my butt off to finish my masters, but I could also take an easier four years and just get a BS with a at least a minor in another field.

Money is a big concern of mine. If I do an accelerated masters, I have to be a "Masters Student" for at least one semester, meaning I'd lose my financial aid and have to pay ~35k out of pocket.

According to my school's career center, the median starting salary for a masters is about 13k more.

Relevant information:
I need a total of 380 units to graduate with a BS. After my sophomore year, I will have 260. However, my school only offers certain classes in the fall and certain classes in the spring. Thus not allowing my to do my BS in 3. A BS in 3.5 is possible, however. Saving me about 22k.

Also, I want to work in either the auto industry or the private aerospace industry (SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, Boeing, etc).

Any advice on the value of a masters vs. a BS?

I would like advice too, i’m sort of in the same position, i can earn a masters in 5 years by studying an additional year at my school, Rensselaer, or just get a BS in 4 years then go somewhere else for graduate school and a masters for another 2 years.

I think if you’re going for a terminal masters it’s generally better to work in industry for a few years then come back. This has a few advantages: 1) When you graduate you’ll have better job opportunities. MS students with no experience often have the same options as BS students. 2) You can often get your employer to pay for at least your tuition, as masters programs are generally unfunded by the university. 3) You’ll have a better idea of what you want to study and how you want to your masters afterwards.

Any reason you aren’t willing to stick around an extra semester or two in order to finish the Master’s degree on a less strict time schedule?

Do you have a good reason for hurrying? If not, take your time and do more useful practical work.
