This may be a weird question, can your accent ruin your interview?

I recently read an article written by a foreign woman living in the US. She basically said that she struggled a lot in finding a job because of her accent. She also claims that foreigners should try to have an american accent to increase their job opportunities.

And this made me wonder if the same applies to the university interviews.

PS. I have an extremely ugly Italian accent :(

As a retired manager for a large aerospace company, we had a lot of engineers that were foreign born; some with pretty thick accents. As long as you could communicate effectively, it isn’t an issue. In conversation, if you didn’t understand something, you could always ask the person to repeat it (if it occurred all the time, then it isn’t effective communication, but once in a while is OK).

What mattered more, was the written communication (i.e. reports, etc.). Those had to be accurate in their transfer of information.

I would assume that college admission staff would have the about same criteria.
