Accept offer now, or try for consulting

I just received an offer from GE healthcare for an internship working in operations. I have to tell them weather I want to work for them this summer by later this week. My ultimate goal is to work for a management or strategy consulting firm and I would like to take interviews with them for internships this summer.

How bad would it be to take the GE offer and then still interview come January with some other consulting firms? Has anyone done this? If so, what re precautions did you face when reneging on an offer of employment?

Thanks

Don’t renege, it makes you look pretty awful if anyone finds out. You’d be very surprised how well connected all of these companies are.

also, at least for the 3 top consulting firms, they hire relatively few interns in comparison to the investment banks. this means that more kids are hired out of full-time recruiting. Therefore, I think your best bet will be to take the GE offer and then interview for consulting full time.
