My son is in his first year at Yale. I too was a bit worried about safety issues. He reports, as with any urban area, use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. NH is safer. My mother attended nursing school in NH back in the early 60’s and said it was not very safe then. Much has changed in the past few decades.
And while Stanford is located in a nice area, it too has its struggles. (Recent string of sexual assaults) Living in any large metropolitan area brings a set of challenges. OP is best served by setting foot on both campuses if possible.
