Acceptable GPA range for top universities?

Generally speaking, on a 4.0 UW scale, what is the acceptable GPA range for the Ivies and for other top universities like Rice, Stanford, MIT, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, etc?

Does a high class rank negate what could be considered a low UW GPA? I.e. the student is top 5% yet their UW is something like 3.7 or whatever is considered insufficient. (It is to my understanding that rank is based on weighted GPA)

Is it true that universities (or top universities) do not consider the weighted aspects of a GPA?

I understand that GPA alone does not get one admitted, rather I would like to know the GPA range that would carry a student to the next round, where test scores, ECs, recommendations, and the essay are analyzed.

There is no GPA cutoff that prevents you from getting into the nonexistent “next round”.

Generally speaking, though, the higher the better…unless you are hooked or are a recruited athlete. And most colleges use the hollistic approach, where they consider ALL aspects of an application at the same time. But honestly, you don’t need a 4.0 UW GPA to get into those schools. They consider class rank together with GPA, especially if you go to an uber-competitive school.
