Acceptable GPA to apply with?

Okay, so I realise almost all of you have a solid 4.0 gpa. And I know that your grades reflect how well you are doing at school, and that having a low gpa in public school (which is suppose to be very easy) shows that you may not be capable of managing the work at boarding school.

I go to a public school (pretty good one)- but I do not have a 4.0. My grades aren't necessarily bad, but I feel like since I am coming from a public school, they're expected to be better. I take many AP classes, and I have an unweighted GPA of about 3.79 or 3.83 (final grades aren't out yet). I worked very hard for this. It's not necessarily a CHALLENGE, it's more of a lot of work.

I'm not concerned about my test scores, but I feel like since I am coming from a Public School, my grades are expected to be much higher than someone that already goes to a rigorous private school.

Sorry for being a tad unclear. Input please?

I think your GPA is quite good. And AO’s will know that some public schools are more challenging than others, especially with magnets etc. I think if your tests show you are competitive, your current school must be as well. That is what most posters are saying when speaking about SSATs being the one consistent factor, not all A’s (or B’s) are equal.

But again, your unweighted GPA is good!

3.79 is SOLID, especially when you have good SSAT scores to back it up.

Hi! So far it seems like you have a great GPA - the weighted will be higher, no? And as far as I know private schools are somewhat different, as some of them have fewer AP classes, so private school students might actually need higher GPAs than public school students. I also agree with MBVLoveless - even if you don’t have the highest of GPAs the SAT/ACT scores (assuming you’re in the US) make all the difference.

Oh yeah this may be unrelated but if you can, taking courses at the local community college or other nearby colleges is really good too for your college application, ESPECIALLY if you get good grades! There are people who have struggled with high school APs but aced college classes of the same subject - and good grades in college classes are often placed in higher regard too. LOL hope this helps! :)

When I visited Deerfield and Choate, they said their average GPA was a 3.75

^for accepted students???

yes. the accepted student average gpa is a 3.75. They want well rounded kids not genius who won’t be social or interact in the community and athletics. Thats why if you look on cc all these kdis have like 4.0s but less than half the kids get into gladchemms on the forums, thats cause kids with 3.5s and 3.4s who are very well rounded and got above an 85 on the ssat are accepted.

says it right on their quick facts page. For deerfield my interviewer told me that.

Baseball, you do realize that having a 4.0 / 95+ SSAT and being an interesting, outgoing, well rounded person are NOT mutually exclusive, right?

i have many friends who are 4.0, 95s and go to hades schools. Im just saying there are students who have those and aren’t very social. thats why there is an interview.

lmao what’s wrong with not being social?

Your grades are fine. @baseball25 nailed it!
