Acceptable GPAs?

As someone who wants to apply to some fairly competitive schools (e.g. UVA oos, BC) where does GPA really come into place? I have a friend who was waitlisted for Brown and Georgetown who like myself had around a flat 90.

Does that GPA render me no longer competitive for the schools I want to get into? I have good but not great SAT scores and hopefully strong essays and recommendations. Also, my school is generally ranked top 1 or 2 in the state and hovers around 25-30 in the country

Didn’t really want to do this but… bump

It’s about rank. A 90 can be top 40% or top 1% depending on your school.

For UVA and BC, top 10% and a 2100 would make you a reasonable candidate.

School doesn’t rank…

Besides, I know I’m not near the top 10%. My school is one of the top 2 in my state (usually 1) and is an intense college prep environment

Schools give enough info for colleges to figure out a rank. If you’re not near 10% and your school does not send 25 plus percent to ivies, BC and UVA OOS will be major reaches.

Don’t forget, the “ranked” high schools don’t include most of the most competitive high schools in the Country–privates and top magnets.

Go to the common data set of the schools you are interested in and see how rank and GPA are weighted in admissions. It varies by school.
