Acceptable grades

How likely does it seem for people who get an unweighted GPA of around 3.5 or 3.6 to be accepted into Brown? I’m talking about this as my worst case-scenario; I may possibly end up with a higher unweighted (and my weighted will probably land around 3.7).
I am currently a junior who is seriously considering applying ED to Brown’s PLME program… and I can honestly say, I think I have the test scores, extracurriculars, teacher & counselor recs necessary, and at least a general direction in which I have been leading myself and feel motivated in for study. And I think that, with enough work and preparation, I will be able to produce some solid, creative essays to accompany my application.

I have posted my holistic stats on this thread; if they may help in an assessment of possibility of acceptance, please take a look at them:

My main concern is that, even if I can fulfill the other requirements necessary to apply to such a college as Brown, my low GPA will definitely detract from my application… and to add to the problem, I am of Indian background (as if there wasn’t enough competition in the app pool already… darn)
Of course, I am doing everything in my power to improve my GPA, but I took a dive in sophomore year with a rigorous course schedule. I am currently showing an upward trend; I will end up with all A’s [not only the filler classes like gym and such, but academic ones], perhaps an A- in one class for this year.
Senior year, I will be taking all APs (Lit, Span. Lit, Gov.Pol., Calc BC, Enviro., Psych.) plus one Honors Physics class, and am DEFINITELY planning to get A’s for the entire year.

If you would please be able to give me your opinion on the matter, I would really appreciate it. Or, if you have any suggestions that I may be able to utilize to improve my application to make up for a low GPA, I’m all ears! Thank you so much!

Very unlikely. Unhooked applicants who get into Brown almost all have perfect or near perfect GPA and are in the top 1% of their class. Usually 1st or 2nd ranked.

cortana you are absolutely wrong!

You don’t need to be 1st or 2nd ranked to get into ANY school in this country. Admissions officers take students from a variety of backgrounds for ANY of the top schools. It depends on a lot of factors like the student, school’s academic reputation, admission officer’s mood, etc etc. For example, my friend with a 3.4 and no hook got into Stanford.

darkmatter, you should definitely apply to Brown having looked at your chances thread. I’m not claiming that you will get in, but you will have certainly have a shot!!!

ED to PMLE is even more rigorous than normal Brown admissions. Based on what you’ve shared, I’d say you’re not a viable candidate. Your SAT is good but the GPA is a serious deficiency vis a vis the other applicants.

Don’t get me wrong: you certainly accomplished a ton and doubtless, will have a great set of options for college. Brown PMLE is crazy competitive and your GPA will be likely your mill stone.

even though it doesn’t have acceptance rate by GPA. What’s important is where your GPA places you in your class. If you are ranked below the top decile, then your chance of getting in is extremely slim. There are applicants with GPAs in your range who get accepted, but they probably either go to a school with a very tough grading curve or are heavily hooked.

As you can see from the page I linked to, the chances of a valedictorian being accepted is just 19%.

i have absolutely no hooks and around that gpa and got in. its possible :)
