I got deferred from the College of Business...
I'm a bit confused about what this means. This means that I didn't get rejected from the business school right, and that is why I didn't even get considered for an alternate college like DGS? So do I have a chance of getting into business come feb 17? and if not, do I still have a chance of getting into DGS?

Stats

Really good essays

@ibanker32: Yes, I was a bit worried when I got deferred also, but then I realized that I still have a chance at my major. Good luck!

If you don’t get into business, you’ll most likely get into DGS. You still have a good chance for your major though, UIUC’s website says that more than 50% of deferred get into their major/DGS.

ok thanks
but doesn’t this mean that I’m going to be at a disadvantage for an alternate program. If I don’t get into the business school then I will be considered for an alternate like DGS and since many people already got into DGS in the Priority time period, wouldn’t that mean that there are less seats available and it would be harder to get in?
So it would’ve been better if I got admitted into an alternate program rather than being deferred?

you are still being considered for business which is good. I think you have a very good shot of getting into business in Feb. with your stats. How were your essays? Business looks heavily at the essays. What was your writing score? Are you instate or out of state?

Hold tight til Feb. I think you have a very good shot for Business. They defer a lot for the Business school. Good luck.

My highest writing score was a 10
I thought my essays were really good

You should consider other schools in the Big Ten while you wait. While you will most likely get into the business school, because you got deferred, I couldn’t see you get that much money in financial aid and scholarships. Look at the University of Minnesota because they have cheaper tuition, you would easily get in, more scholarships, and their business school is just as good if not better than U of I.

Businessweek ranks U of I’s Business School at 18 overall, with it’s Accountancy program ranked 2nd in the nation this year. It bounces back and forth between 1st and 2nd consistantly. Minnesota’s business school is ranked 48th overall in businessweek. No slouch, but nowhere near as good as Illinois, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the know that thinks it’s better.

Indiana’s Kelly School of Business is very good. I’d apply there as well as Michigan’s Ross, and Notre Dame’s Mendoza. All, however, are highly selective, as is Illinois. I’d apply at Minnesota as a safety.

You should look into your facts before you post. Those sources (business week and US News and World Report) heavily use student polls in their rankings, but at the University of Minnesota they don’t have their students fill out such polls. This is why Minnesota is so bad in the rankings and probably is why it’s easier to get in even though it’s a better school I will admit that accounting at U of I is very good but in REAL rankings, the University of Minnesota ranks 16th in business in the nation.

What REAL ranking are you referring to? Please share…

Henrybob, student surveys represent 30% of the score. Minnesota students absolutely participated in large enough numbers to be included in the rankings, or Minnesota wouldn’t have even been ranked. Recruiter surveys were also weighted in the study with recruiters ranking Illinois 9th overall, and Minnesota 50th. That eliminates the student bias, if that’s what you were worried about.

While I’m happy that you made it into Minnesota’s School of Business this year, and while your school spirit is admirable, I believe it is clouding your judgement. And it sounds like you’ve got some kind of bone to pick with Illinois. They didn’t turn you down did they?

No, I would consider myself slightly biased to Minnesota, but I didn’t get denied to Illinois. So I had to pick between the two.
