Emory has been my dream school for about a year now and I am now wrapping up my junior year of high school. I have about a 3.7 gpa weighted and have been participating in crew from freshmen this year and plan on continuing for a fourth year to come next fall. My ACT scores as of now have been a 29 but I plan on taking it until I reach 32 minimum. Also I am doubled up in languages taking french and also in the Spanish Heritage class at my school being that I am hispanic. I have also been a part of the visual arts classes all four years and am now taking an AP drawing course and next year am set to take a seminar class. Everything I have found out about Emory I have just fallen in love with and I want to know any sort of recommendations anyone has to boost my chances of acceptance. Also, any comments if I would be able to get accepted or not. Thank you!
Hey! So I got accepted this year to both Emory and Oxford College, AND to their scholar’s program.
Personally, I had a talk with some admission’s people and let me tell you, the process is way different that we imagine. Obviously having ‘good’ SATs and GPA is great! But what they’re looking for is to understand the real you through your application - what do you stand for? what characterizes you? How honest about yourself are you?
This is because Emory University is a lot about heart, in all true honesty. I’m an international student so when I say this I’m being very, very sincere. So when Emory is about being a human, it’s about understanding that YOU are capable of anything. Meaning? You’re doing great! But what makes you special? Remember that Emory is very socially oriented university (as in, volunteer work) so try to find your passion outside school and invest in it - so cultivate your talent/passion/what you like and also involve yourself with others and try to have genuine experience beyond your grades. That makes heartfelt essays and heartfelt applications.
From what I read you could get accepted but, yet again, to be an Emory student you should get to know it. Check out their blogs and webpage. Or even Emory Wheel (their newspaper). You still have time to enrich your application and make sure to be passionate or find the interesting sides of your classes… and maybe think as well WHAT teacher could give you a GOOD recommendation. As in, maybe the teacher who’s seen you grow rather than the one that simply knows that you get good grades.
Basically, since the selection process is hollistic, your activities should hollistically reflect who you are
