Acceptance dilemma

My friend applied to UMass and got rejected from the university. However she did receive a Chancellor's Talent Award for music (she plays bassoon) and we found this situation odd. The admissions office did not give her a very clear response when she called and asked.

She recently heard back and found out that she did not meet the minimum GPA requirement partly because her numerous fine arts classes were not included (her GPA is 2.9 as opposed to the 3.0 requirement). So she sent in an appeal and is now waiting for a response.

Is this a normal situation? Should she be accepted or denied? It seems the music dept wants her but the college does not. Is there anything she could do? Thanks!

3.0 is not an absolute minimum, but if your GPA is below that you have to score at a certain level on the SAT M+CR.

With a 2.9 your friend would need a 950.
