Acceptance for Class of 2021

@gershwinfan affirmative action is always first and primary. Americans are last. So, as soon as they fill their quota for non-americans we will be notified after. endrant.

As for a legitimate answer, not sure of the date.

Thank you @reformedman ! I can’t help but notice that your profile picture is the RPI logo. RPI is my top choice right now, do you know anything of a comparison between Stevens and RPI?

Dandellion congratulations. I wonder why you heard already - We are still waiting to hear - hope it’s sooner than April 1st. Did you find out by looking on the portal or get something in the regular mail?

@gershwinfan Up until today, RPI was our top choice. We got our notice that Notre Dame rejected my son so we fell back to RPI. But today we got our notice from Carnegie Mellon that accepted my son so now Carnegie Mellon will be my new avatar (I’ll change it in a few minutes).

As far as differences, this is what I know of both. I went to an RPI tour and I found it very linear and it gave me an institutional feel. My son doesn’t care for anything about college, he just wants his degree and get on with life so he didn’t mind. It is very expensive, no matter your academic qualification or household incoome, it will be very expensive. We got near $30k financial aid offer but we can’t afford the $40k leftover to pay so we fell back on our safety school NJIT.

Today we got our notice of Carngie Mellon and we are waiting for our financial aid notice when it comes tonight at midnight, then we can finally decide between CMU and NJIT. RPI is out of the question.

You asked about Stevens and all I know is a dear friend from church went there for a year and he was highly qualified with superior scores in SAT and GPA. Incidentally he got into Carnegie Mellon also but it was too expensive for him so he didn’t attend. After 1 year at Stevens he was dissapointed mostly because most of his professors did not speak English well and had a hard time communicating with the students. The facilities appeared shabby. We found this out AFTER having registered on the common app. When we found out about this we regretted applying. So even if they accept us with a good Financial aid award, we will turn them down.

If you had a choice and were able, I’d say RPI is better. What other schools are on your list?

One reason to go to Stevens? Forbes article from March 2016, lists Stevens amongst schools whose graduates have highest starting salaries. My son applied to Stevens (for computer science), triggered by coaches reaching out to him to play on a DIII team. He had participated in an Engineer Awareness HS program last summer at Manhattan College, and he said so many of the kids there interested in engineering wanted to go to Stevens. After visiting Stevens (and Stony Brook, NYIT, ST Johns) he preferred Stevens’ environment, student body, campus. We didn’t see a shabby facility there at all.
Since my son applied, we’ve had the following advice come our way:

  1. My friend’s daughter, a chemical engineer, who works for Loreal said they mostly get interns from Stevens and they are extremely reputable and dependable.
  2. My coworker mentioned college friend who went to Stevens had no problem getting a job straight out of college. (Very important.)
  3. My nephew’s dad, who lives in Hoboken and is in finance, said my son will have no problem getting a job. Stevens has great reputation locally and in the industry.
  4. Another coworkers son and his girlfriend, both computer science grads also told her to tell me my son will not regret going to Stevens. They went to NYU Polytechnic, but as ‘insiders’ in the computer science field, they know Stevens grads land jobs with high starting salaries.

In the end, each student does what is best for them. Stevens may not be the right fit for some but is the best school for others. I have to say, though, we have heard mostly positive things for Stevens. A negative being the cost.

That’s great to know, thank you so much @reformedman , and congratulations to your son on Carnegie Mellon! Coincidentally CMU is also on my list, along with Villanova, TCNJ, Lafayette and Cornell.

My main concern with RPI is the cost. While I got a good amount of aid, it’s still very expensive. However, from the research I’ve done it seems that the opportunities offered and job prospects could very well make it worth it (I’m going to be a civil engineering major). Thoughts on this?

Civil Engineering in NY, yup good move. NYC is great for hiring for civil and industrial engineering students and RPI is 2 hours away for them to make the trip so RPI, with it’s reputation and it’s proximity is a fertile ground for work placement scouts to go to. Lehigh has an amazing engineering reputation also so I’m curious why you chose Lafayette over Lehigh which are neighboring colleges. We were rejected Cornell in Early Decision, he turned down TCNJ in favor of NJIT and Villanova also is great for is academia but not sure for its job-placement. Good luck.

@ny_mom3 thanks for that. Stevens is my son’s first choice and he’s eagerly awaiting admissions response. I’ve heard some negative things, usually about professors, but he REALLY likes it…and most importantly the positive I’ve heard is about getting a job afterwards, and that’s what you’d hope for! Any college is what you make it, there will be great professors, ok professors, and annoying ones LOL but I know he’ll find what makes him happy, and do well. Fingers crossed! They are taking soooo long!

My son is also hoping to get into Stevens. We have not heard back yet. I too am worried about some of the online reviews, as well as small size but he really wants to go. Keep hoping he will hear- all of his others except GWU have arrived and we need to start the decision process…

IN we just heard, yay. Good luck all.

waitlisted, but it isn’t my top choice so it’s okay. good luck everyone!

Woohoo! DD accepted with invite to Pinnacle Scholars Program. Tuition Exchange Scholarship of $35k per year.

Got in with a 18k scholarship… probably not going to accept as it is not my best financial aid offer. Wishing the best for everyone else!

Rejected … I came to the USA last year, my stats are simply:
SAT Scores : 1340 (Math 760, RW 580), , 1330 (770 Math, RW 560) ,
AP Scores : Calculus BC (5)(Self study),
Physics I : 1
WGPA: 3.833 (Because I was new last year, I couldn’t take so much AP classes)

I still didn’t understand why I got rejected, I thought my math stats are well. Any guess, comment ?

My sophomore DD is a Pinnacle Scholar and there are lots of perks attached. She had a class with the university president freshman year.

@CollDad802 Congrats!! My son was waitlisted - oh well! Thank goodness he has other options.

@yesilhop Ur maths scores are really good but i think they also take reading scores into consideration. How about your TOEFL or IELTS?

@tle2034 Thank you for your response.I didn’t take them because i am not an international student and all colleges except IVYs or some other prestigous colleges, don’t require. By now, I got accepted to NJIT with 26k scholarship (need+merit) and Fordham 48k scholarship (7k metro grant for commuting), but this one really surprised me.

@yesilhop could be many reasons: reading score low, ECs, GPA, did you do an interview? And it’s a small school.

@yesilhop Don’t worry too much about the ap classes, what’s most important to them is the SAT/ACT, The GPA, and The attempt to take the strongest classes. Everything isn’t as important.

With regard to your SAT test results that you posted, I don’t see your math SAT subject test score. Did you take one?
You said that you came to the US last year, are you now a citizen? Or are you an international?
What is your intended major? If it is Engineering, then you will need that SAT subject test for math.
Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.
