hi everyone,
My name is Matt and i am new to college confidential but i wanted to pose a quick question for the Syracuse thread?
I applied for a BFA in musical theatre for Syracuse and i was just accepted into the BFA in Acting program at SU.
My question is does anyone know if this is a good program?
And, how is it possible for me to be accepted into just the acting program?
Lastly, i was curious if anyone knew if i did decide to go to Syracuse for the BFA in acting is there any way to transfer or get into the BFA in musical theatre and is there much difrence in the two programs?
thank you

Hi Matt,

I am a freshman in the BFA Acting program. When I auditioned I put MT and Acting on my audition sheet. Did you do the same? I also did early decision. After accepting the Acting placement my plans were to audition into the MT theater my freshman year, but I am so happy with what I am doing. SU's strength is their acting!!!! They are "fierce" and the program is intense.

I take dance (more than the MT students right now) and take vocal lessons (although I had to wait a semester for a spot for the voice lessons) and can audition for the shows. If you look at the 2 curriculums on their site you will see the differences between MT and Acting (www.syr.edu then college of visual of performing arts college). Where they show "academic credits" I take voice and dance. I brought college credits with me and will try to take a class each summer at home or wherever to keep up. Supposedly I have the same opps as the MT students. We shall see

Like I mentioned above You can audition for the MT program again your freshman year along with everyone else on the High School circuit. I am not sure how that works seeing you will be behind on the Music Theory and the MT pract. You should talk to Murphy at the Archbold Theater.

But my advise to you is unless this is the school you love, and acting is something you want to do I wouldn't SETTLE. There is a possibility when you audition you won't get into the MT program then you will be in a school (an expensive school) you don't want to be in doing something you don't want to do. So think carefully.

Good Luck.

when did you find out you were accepted? and how? phone call, email, snail mail???

Jessie,
Thank you for your reply. So you like the acting training your getting at syracuse. Who is you said i should talk to? Also if im going to syracuse with out any college credit will i be able to take dance classes and voice lessons or not? What is the BFA acting program like?
Thanks

umm i was informed i was accepted through first an email that had a connecting site in it where it brought up an official letter from syracuse and then a couple of days later i got the official letter and package of materials in the mail.

Matt,

Speak with Murphy. I don't have her number and I am on Spring Break right now, but if you call the College of Visual and Performing Arts and tell them you are trying to reach Murphy down at Archbold Theater they will give you the number.

For one thing this summer I highly suggest you take a class or preferrably two at a local college for credit--it really takes the weight off and they are generally a good way to get a good grade. Call and make sure your summer college is acceptable for transfer of credits.

At SU you have academic credits each semester to take whatever you want sometimes is 3 sometimes it is 6--I have been taking 2 dance classes and voice. Now I am not sure if the "rule" is that they should be anything but drama credits--that is why I went with credits and I will continue to rack them up when I can. That is a great question for Murphy and when you find out let me know!!!!

And Yes in my opinion the SU Acting is their strength, the faculty is very impressive and all methods are studied, their dance program is expanding next year and the teachers are excellent and thier voice is good---there are great choirs/chorus's at night that you can get involved in through the Setnor School of Music (that is where you would have to go for your voice lesson) although they don't require you to do it I think it could only help (although I didn't do it this year--I may next)

I applied early decision last year and was notified by email in January in which they asked me for my response after my response they sent me my package.

Hello everyone. I was accepted into the BFA Acting program at SU and am entering next month in August for Fall 2013! I’m very excited. I know SU has great opportunities such as studying abroad in London and performing at the Shakespeare Globe theatre, and also the Tepper Semester in NYC, but other than those two, do SU performers get good exposure to professionals in the business?
