My daughter was accepted under academic admission. We were told that it was best to apply for housing right away. But she is interested in honors housing and we haven't heard anything from them about her being accepted into the program. When would we hear about that? She was accepted 12/9. Also, we are out of state and hoping for a scholarship to get in-state tuition. Does anyone know if A&M is very likely to do this?

go ahead and apply for housing. housing is NOT guaranteed, so applying ASAP is crucial. you will only lose 25 bucks (i think) if she doesn’t go there.

idk about the scholarship stuff. maybe call and talk to someone and see if they can give you an idea how likely this is.

Unless the rules change next year, the last 2 yrs, Honor Dorms cannot be requested by regular students during housing selection. It has to be honors eligible and / or have an academic scholarship. You cannot ask for roommate for Honor Dorm for freshman, it is assign by the housing honor committee. The student indicated their interest in honor dorm when they accept their scholarship / acceptance. Only Clements Hall which are for Sophomore and above students can request roommates.

Do most honors kids live in the honors dorms? Are those dorms less social than others? And we’re supposed to apply for housing ASAP? If I don’t until March, is there a good chance of me not getting a dorm?

I know I’ll automatically be admitted, so can I apply for housing before being accepted?

Thanks for the input, everyone. I did click on the link above and read that she met the qualifications for honors, so I am assuming that she is in. She did get an email from the honors advisors thanking her for her interest and offering help with classes. But it just didn’t say she was in, so I was confused. We will go ahead and apply for honors housing and see what happens. She is very smart, but also VERY social and she wants a very active dorm. Do you think she will be a good fit for honors housing?

you can’t apply for housing until after you are accepted.

idk if honors kids have priority and would get a room anyway if they apply late. i wouldn’t risk it.

Honors housing is perhaps the MOST social on campus, due to the activities and the support they have. If by social, you mean partying and drinking, look elsewhere. If you mean fun and involved, honors is the best.

Thanks. I definitely mean fun and involved. She is not a partier. And she has been accepted to the university, I just wasn’t sure about to the honors program. Actually, that was my main question: How do they let you know about honors and when do they let you know?

Howdy,

“Honors” at A&M isn’t really a separate entity from the rest of the university like it is at some schools. Basically as long as you meet the requirements to register for honors classes, you are “in honors.” Honors basically involves taking honors classes that count toward graduating with an honors distinction in one way or another. If your daughter meets the requirements found here: [Honors Eligibility | Honors Programs | Texas A&M University](<a href=“Honors - LAUNCH”>Honors - LAUNCH) then she will be able to register for honors classes. You can read more about the different honors distinctions here: [Honors Programs at Texas A&M University | Scholarships](<a href=“Honors - LAUNCH”>Honors - LAUNCH)

Housing is a bit trickier. Since space is limited they award spots based on how someone is classified. (More here: [Honors Housing Community | Honors Programs | Texas A&M University](<a href=“Honors - LAUNCH”>Honors - LAUNCH) under Application Procedures). I suppose you also have to fill out the Honors Housing Community application on that website. (I think they used a different system last year when I applied for honors housing.) Anyway I highly recommend honors housing–it has some of the best community/traditions on campus.

I am a freshman honors student living in the McFadden honors hall so if you have any more questions I would be happy to answer them. Hope I helped!

^So National Merit Finalists get the first choice if they apply early? I’m one but can’t finish the app process until I go back to school in the beginning of January. Do you think I’ll still get honors housing since I’m a NMF even though I’ll send in one of the last applications? (I did talk to someone who said I’ll still get the scholarship even though I’m applying after the scholarship deadline.)

^ Yes. If you look at the honors housing application, <a href=“Honors - LAUNCH”>Honors - LAUNCH;

it says: “National Merit Finalists and National Achievement Finalists (guaranteed a spot in McFadden|Lechner if the April 1 deadline is met).”

If I get all my things in by Jan 10 or so, I should be admitted before April 1st, right? Or is there a good chance that I might not hear back until April 1st, and miss the dealine?

Yeah I would imagine you will get processed long before April 1st.

review admit here got decision in about 6 weeks.

jrt, if you have any concerns at all, contact the NMF office. They will be able to tell you how to ensure housing and address all your concerns. They are VERY helpful!

I just did the honors housing app after the main one, and I hit email. Did it work because it doesn’t say it sent or anything?

so im a little bit confused by the website. do you have to be in the top 10% to be in honors and live in honors. or can a person who is just out of top 10% but with a high SAT score take honors courses?

First-semester freshmen may enroll in an Honors course if they meet either of the following criteria:

A.Be in the top 10% of their high school graduating classes and have a combined score of at least 1250 on the verbal and math portions of the SAT (with at least 570 in both sections) or a combined score of 28 on the ACT (with 27 in English and math).

B.Be a National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholar

straight from the website. Yes you have to be top 10% unless you are national merit which in that case I would think you would fit criterion A anyways.

so from that, can you qualify for honors scholarships if your not top 10%???

Well honors scholarships have all been given out. I would say you will not be competitive for honors college scholarships outside top 10%. They don’t give out very many of them. 400-500 Lechner/Presidential Scholarships based on website info. It is difficult to get a scholarship of any kind here. It is “be a national merit finalist or bust” for the biggest ones.
