Acceptance into the Chapman U Honors program
I have received some questions regarding the Chapman U Honors program so I put the information I was able to find below:
What is the honors program: The Honors Program is designed for academically talented and intellectually curious students who want to pursue exacting studies in a wide range of enduring intellectual concerns that cross disciplines and cultures. The purpose of an Honors education is to encourage continued intellectual development, nurture a lifelong love of learning, and prepare each student for a personally fulfilling and socially responsible life during their college years at Chapman and beyond.
How do you apply to be in the Honors Program: The 2015-2016 application process is open! You may apply online or download a paper application and mail it to the Honors Program. The application review process for fall usually begins at the beginning of March. Admission is on a rolling basis until the program is full. To receive a decision before May 1, it is best to submit an application prior to April 1.
What are the requirements to be accepted into the Honors Program: A successful candidate for the honors program will exhibit a strong motivation for interdisciplinary studies and an enthusiastic commitment to learning. First and foremost, a compelling essay is crucial for a successful application. Applicants typically have a first-rate GPA and highly competitive SAT and ACT scores. Other criteria may include outstanding leadership and/or creative achievement, community involvement, and a range of interests and experiences. The program best serves students who approach their education in a mature and responsible manner, which includes showing respect for others in the classroom as well as in the community at large.
Can students apply after their freshman year, or if they are a transfer student: Yes. There is no requirement that you have to be in the program all four years of college. If you start later but plan to finish the requirements before graduation, you can apply. Current CU students can only apply to the honors program prior to attaining 60 credits.
Do you have to be accepted into the Honors Program to take honors classes: Yes, except on rare occasions. Students not in the honors program need prior approval from the instructor of the class and the honors program director. Honors courses are designed for students who are willing to engage in an intellectually demanding course of studies.
What requirements do honors students need to meet: Students take 9 courses. These must include at least 1 course from each of the 3 main categories (Human Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences), the 1-credit Honors Forum during their 1st year as an Honors student, and the Honors Capstone Seminar. Total credits: 25. Transfer students with 60 units or more prior to matriculation take 6 Honors courses (1 from each of the 3 main categories, the 1-credit Honors Forum during their 1st year as an Honors student, and the Honors Capstone Seminar). Total credits for transfer students: 16.
How does Honors fit into the Chapman U curriculum: Completion of the program satisfies the Inter-Multidisciplinary GE cluster, which every Chapman student must complete. Select honors courses may also satisfy other major, minor or GE requirements.
