ohiobassmom - thanks for resurrecting the thread. I just ordered library copies of Acceptance and The Gatekeepers. Looking forward to reading. But, yes, I also would be interested in new recommendations.

I read “Getting In” over the holiday, not bad either. More about the effect of the process on the parents and kids than the process itself, but a decent read.

[Book Report: ‘Getting In’ - NYTimes.com](Book Report: 'Getting In' - The New York Times)

“Jane Austen in Scarsdale or Love, Death and the SATs” by Paula Marantz. Fictional story of a Scarsdale HS GC and the kids she assists with college aps, pushy parents clawing for elite schools…fun read perfect for the gym.

Thanks for the rec, I’ll check that one out.

I think my favorite so far has been “Crazy U” [Crazy U | Book by Andrew Ferguson - Simon & Schuster](Crazy U | Book by Andrew Ferguson | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster)

I laughed out loud rather a lot, then felt sad at the very end. Got much of the insight the other books give on the process, he just made it funny.

Acceptance, the one that started this thread, just came in from the library.

I read a different Acceptance/I, about some kids applying to fictional “Yates U” that was OK, not great. * The Gatekeepers was a bit of a letdown too, in part because it’s not fiction, but didn’t really give any more info than some of the fiction I’ve read, like *Admissions /I.

I think as I explore the “admissions lit” genre, I get a little pickier each time. Maybe because the basic message - Admissions reps CARE, they have to turn away super smart special kids, they’re looking for that interesting but brilliant kid to jump off the app’s page - is kind of similar from book to book.

It’s become a bit of an obsession, these books. Each time I hear of a new one, I order it from the library and usually I actually read it too ;)

I read and enjoyed Acceptance. It did make me wish our GC was like him.

I guess the book is non-fiction, I wasn’t sure. It had less “drama” than some other “admissions lit” I’ve read lately, but it was OK.
