My son got his packet in the mail today. We were thrilled he was accepted into the FSB. However the packet does not make mention of merit scholarship money. Is this where we should learn about merit $? He appears to be in the range for the lowest merit range but no mention of it in his packet. Any insight would be appreciated. Does it just not get sent out yet or do I need to call?

In the packet that people got this week, they included an estimate of what you will get from merit aid, but nothing you got this week is guaranteed.

They send final scholarship information sometime in March

thanks @atfer87 I think I will call the school this week to see if this means he is out of the running for a scholarship. Fingers crossed he is offered something. :)

I don’t know lefty1 - DS is in a guaranteed merit category and he and someone else on here did not receive any merit info with the acceptance packet that came this week. Sure can’t hurt to check though - please let us know if you do.

I don’t think that’s right. I have a 36 on my ACT, a 4.0/4.0 UW GPA, and I’ve taken the most rigorous schedule possible, and there was no mention of merit money in my admissions packet.

There is a separate letter that arrives shortly after the big packet that should contain info on any of the automatic scholarship thresholds that Miami has on its website.

Based on reading this thread a while, I see a wide disparity of offers. Kids with top scores that get the minimum and kids getting the max but then not being offered Honors or UASP. Weird. You could say it was holistic except Miami did not request essays. So unless they have some perfect calibrator of ECs (without context from essays) across states and school sizes it appears somewhat random. Yes they have recos but that is secondhand.

Miami offering early notifications to some back in Dec was also very random. It does not appear they only chose the top 5% or top 2% of the overall EA pool to notify early as a recruiting “pull”. So I suspect it was a subset who handed apps in early.

No offense intended. Just noting it seems pretty random.

I understand. Miami is only in the running for me because I’ve assumed that I’d get full tuition (which is logical to assume given my scores and the criteria by which they award their merit scholarships). I’d be pretty confused, not to mention angry, if I got the minimum award, but I digress. I really like Miami and could see myself choosing it over Dartmouth.

My DS14 was accepted. His stats put him in the 1/2 to full range but we have not yet heard anything about scholarships or honors.

Still waiting and hoping.

Good news in the mailbox today! DS14 was offered full tuition and entry into the academic scholars program! Very excited for these offers. The official offer package will arrive in late march. Based on FAFSA EFC, I don’t think anything else will be forthcoming.

Congratulations!! What were his stats, Dave?

Thanks for the congratulations, @OHMomof2

I don’t mind posting his stats; I’ve found it helpful in the past when others have done this.

Thanks for doing that Dave. My D is a junior considering MU and it’s really helpful to see who gets full and who gets half as full is what makes it an attractive option.

Thanks Dave. In Dec DD was notified of a merit scholarship of 14K with a 32ACT, but that in late March “your final package may contain one or more scholarships that will be combined for an annual total of at least $14,000.” Maybe something else will be offered? She was accepted into Farmer and the Honors program.

efeens44 - what is your intended major? I ask because our son was where you are about 10 months ago. Dartmouth is also an amazing school but don’t be surprised if you like Miami more. It’s really like a liberal arts college but it also has the technical programs and resources of a major state school. And what they say about the quality of undergrad teaching at MU being on a par with Dartmouth and Princeton - I understand why. Between my wife and me, our son would have been a legacy admit to Georgetown, UVa, Northwestern, and the U of Chicago - and he didn’t apply to any of them and we couldn’t be happier that he ended up at Miami (in the Honors College). He’s not exactly super social but within a week or so found two guys to hang out with who are on the same wavelength - while each of their roommates are very different, and also all very bright, a broad range. Visit if you haven’t already. For the merit scholarship kids looking at bigger “name” schools, you can get everything you need, and more support and recognition than you would elsewhere. Oh - plus - the merit aid transfers if you want to do a semester or a year at Miami’s Luxembourg campus, which is a pretty sweet deal too.
