Article was published in The Chronicle this morning, mostly detailing the admissions process but also stating the acceptance rate for 2014. Link is below:

“This year, admissions officers collectively recommended that more than half of the applicants be denied without review in committee, Guttentag said. He added that admissions officers only recommended that 500 to 700 applicants be automatically accepted.”

Half the applications were automatically denied…Why do I have a feeling that I am part of that group?

Really? That probably has to be the dumbest thing that I have ever heard coming from an admissions office. I got a 760 on math and only missed one question because of a moronic curve and that drops me out of contention for the full five points in that section? Because I missed a single question on the math section…just wow. I understand that the points system doesn’t hold much weight in committee but I still find the way they assign the points to be quite…eh…arbitrary?

Reading that article makes me wonder perhaps there is a bit of truthto the “time stamp/ two batch” theory…still cannot determine anything from it though.

Also…does this mean that the regular decision acceptance rate is like 11%?

And,

I have a feeling that this means that the Trinity applicant pool wasn’t that strong this year (and that the half of the applications that were automatic rejects were mainly applicants to Trinity). I hope this means that most of us on CC who applied to Trinity get in XD.

i kinda agree with justthedad! the two times thing makes more sense but still not enough to make a real judgment on! All i hope is that I get in. I’m so desperate right now that i keep looking at my sisters Duke acceptance letter every 5 minutes!

yeah my sister graduates from Duke this year so it would be perfect if i got in. i think 1:16 could be the kiss of death now! unfortunately for me, I have that time!

yeh but there was a higher percentage of people with 1:16’s . and a lot on CC without LL’s. I agree though it does make sense. Guess I’m a sure rejection. Great Fun.

Don’t take the rejection too hard if you can help it. Just the fact that you are “in the arena” and have a real chance to get in, puts you well ahead of the hundreds of thousands of others who could not even attempt to apply to such schools as I am sure you have. You have no doubt accomplished more than most in your age group, so if it is not Duke that you attend, it will be another highly regarded college for sure. Our son had his heart set on one of the ivy’s and applied ED, and got a rejection. we were all a bit shocked at first (mainly being new to the whole process I guess). But after a short time he (we ) all recovered and moved on to plan B. He has a few acceptances so far, and still a few reaches left to hear from. Try to stay positive.

I was really, really upset when i got deferred ED. I really thought I wouldn’t be happy at any college other than Duke, but obviously I was completely wrong. I can’t attend even if I do get in this round, but am expecting a no. But i am okay with that, because i know i wasn’t a flat out no, they had to put some thought into it. But people, even if you get rejected, you will find a school that is good for you. I know i did, and i’m gunna be happy next year - your lifes not over, trust me i totally thought mine was.
